Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel Innovation Funds

The application for the prestigious Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel Innovation Funds is open for application the innovation prize of $5000 is awarded to Africa entrepreneurs whose projects are innovative the programme is also supported by the CIVICUS.

The CIVICUS is making the innovation prize offer to the world; any entrepreneur from any country in the world who is qualified to apply for the Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel innovation fund

The 2022 Innovation prize will award qualified entrepreneurs, group of entrepreneurs or organizations that project or business is innovative enough and contributing to build brighter world. The project is also expected to touch social interest of the people, rights, securities and justice.

Applicants are expected to have their projects under the following topics;

Building a sustainable and social justice

Creative and positive narratives for people’s power

Democratic global governance

Democratic global systems and global processes

Enhancement of global diversities and activism.

Promotion of digital civic space

Resourcing youth-led groups and movements

Sustenance of people power

Community care

Successful entrepreneurs will be awarded in each of all the categories, awardees in each of the categories will receive fund of 5000 united state dollars.

There are other benefits for participants and winners of the Nelson Mandela and Gaca machel entrepreneurship funds, applicants who are shortlisted to participate in the entrepreneurship programme will be recommended by the organization for public endorsements and winners will be announced afterward

The Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel Innovation funds would lift and strengthen the importance of the social needs, social activism, sustainability and also making for a better world.

The programme will impact on the people as it would create platform for networking, learning, building together, sharing ideas and opinions, inspiring fellows, donating and enabling the positive changes that the world need at this time.

The application Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel Innovation is now open for interested entrepreneurs to apply. Group of entrepreneurs and registered organization can also apply nd participate in the innovative programme.

Who Can Apply/Eligibility

The programme is open to worldwide entrepreneurs. However the applicants must be eligible in order to be considered for the award. Individual entrepreneurs, groups and registered organizations are qualified to apply provided other requirements are met.

Requirements are as follows

Entrepreneur applying must be 18 years old and above at the time of application

Entrepreneur applying must submit an application in English, French or Spanish.

Entrepreneur applying must be a national and resident from the following regions: Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Pacific.

Entrepreneur applying must work with organizations, or networks of people, movements, at the grassroots, local communities

Entrepreneur applying whether registered or unregistered are eligible to apply

Entrepreneur applying must be from the locale in which the entrepreneur intends to make impact or is making impact in the case of an already existing organization

Entrepreneur applying must have worked to build people power in entrepreneur’s community for at least 2-years.

Entrepreneur applying must belong to an organization, network, movement or community that would eventually benefit from the entrepreneurship award. This is applicable to individual applicants

Entrepreneur applying must have not received funding from CIVICUS in the past 2-years.

Entrepreneur’s work or the proposed initiative relates directly to one of the following topics that we listed above:

Application process

Entrepreneur applying must follow these steps to apply for the 2021 Innovation Awards:

When you want to apply, first select your language and click on apply on the application portal and take eligibility survey and proceed to send in your application.

Applicants who pass the eligibility survey will immediately have access to the official online application form. Those who do not pass the quiz are not eligible to participate in the Awards and cannot submit an application form. We implemented the eligibility quiz to help non-eligible candidates save time and effort.

Eligible applicants have two options:

Complete and submit the online application form immediately when redirected to it.

Download a template of the application form (also provided after passing the quiz) to prepare their answers in advance. When ready, go back to the eligibility quiz to access the online application form, copy-paste the prepared answers, and submit the online form.

Important note

Please note that the application form must be completed and submitted online without exceptions. The organization does not receive applications via email or any other channels. The application form template cannot be submitted as an official application by any means.

Deadline to submit the online application form: 20 September 2022.

Selection Process

Applications will be assessed based on the selection criteria outlined below. Those applications that meet all the eligibility and selection criteria will be included in the People Power Innovation Zone database, with shortlisted entrepreneur being featured for public endorsement in an Innovation gallery.

The 2022 Innovation Awards Selection Committee will shortlist the ideas featured on the areas we listed above based the following selection criteria:

Relevance (20%) – does the initiative clearly address and build on one of the seven key topics related to people power discussed during ICSW/virtual? (Applications that do not meet the ‘Relevance’ criteria will be disqualified.)

Innovation (20%) – does the initiative embody a new or renewed (for your context) approach, product or service that supports people power?

Experience (10%) – does the individual/group/organization have demonstrated experience in organizing and mobilizing people, support and resources around initiatives, actions and campaigns?

Relevance to context (10%) – does the initiative clearly respond to a key challenge and need in the community?

Constituency engagement (10%) – does the initiative clearly demonstrate meaningful engagement with community/movement members?

Contribution to change (10%) – does the initiative make a significant contribution to building people power?

Enrichment (5%) – does the individual/group/organization need greater visibility or solidarity to access financial or other support?

Endorsements (5%) – has the initiative received significant public/peer support?

Clarity (10%) – is the initiative clear and easy to understand? Is the thought process and vision well communicated?

The Selection Committee will moderate and identify the 2021 Innovation Awards Winners to reflect a diversity of perspectives, including:

Geographic – the final cohort will represent regional diversity

Thematic – the final cohort will focus on different topics and trends related to people power

Type – the final cohort will represent the diversity of civil society, e.g., smaller, less formal groups and movements, young people, traditionally excluded groups, etc.

Shortlisted applicants will be notified via email October.  The seven 2022 Innovation Awards Winners will be publicly announced in early November, 2022.
