Introduction to the PAGES Inter-Africa Mobility Research Fellowship 2025

The PAGES Inter-Africa Mobility Research Fellowship 2025 is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on research experience in another African country, fully supported by the Past Global Changes (PAGES) project, if you are a passionate early-career African scientist working on the history of Earth’s climate or environmental change.

This program is designed to promote intra-African scientific collaboration, support paleoscience research, and strengthen academic networks across the continent.

About the PAGES Inter-Africa Mobility Research Fellowship 2025

The PAGES Inter-Africa Mobility Research Fellowship supports early-career African scientists, including PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, who are studying aspects of past global changes. The initiative enables them to carry out short-term research visits to another African country.

Fellows receive support for travel and subsistence expenses for up to four weeks. The ultimate aim is to foster regional collaboration, develop research skills, and strengthen Africa’s contribution to global paleoscience knowledge.

Eligible Fields

The fellowship is open to researchers working on topics within the scientific scope of Past Global Changes (PAGES), such as:

  • Paleoclimatology
  • Paleoecology
  • Geosciences
  • Earth system science
  • Environmental history
  • Climate variability and change

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the PAGES Inter-Africa Mobility Research Fellowship 2025, applicants must:

  • Be an early-career researcher (PhD student nearing completion, recent PhD graduate, or postdoc within five years of PhD award)
  • Be a citizen of any African country
  • Be currently based at an African research institution or university
  • Be actively working on a project aligned with PAGES’ themes
  • Propose a research exchange to another African country
  • Secure a host institution and include a confirmation letter from the host
  • Commit to a research exchange that lasts between two and four weeks
  • Submit all required application materials in English or French

Note: Applicants must maintain employment or student status at their home institution during the fellowship.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on the:

  • Scientific merit of the proposed research (max. 1000 words)
  • Impact of the fellowship on the applicant’s career and home institution (max. 200 words)
  • Clarity and feasibility of the proposed timeline and outcomes
  • Detailed budget, with eligible expenses clearly stated in USD
  • Quality of recommendation letters from home and host supervisors
  • Applicant’s academic CV (maximum two pages)

Eligible Countries

This fellowship is exclusive to citizens of African countries, and research must be conducted within Africa.

Required Documents

Applicants must submit:

  • Completed application form, including:
    • Research proposal
    • Fellowship impact statement
    • Timeline and expected outcomes
    • Detailed budget
  • Two recommendation letters:
    • One from the current supervisor (home institution)
    • One from the host supervisor (host institution)
  • Curriculum Vitae (max. 2 pages)

  • Maximum: 4 weeks
  • Must be completed within 12 months of the award date

Upon completion, fellows must submit:

  • Scientific report
  • Financial statement
  • Short article (650 words) with one figure, for publication in the Past Global Changes Magazine
