About the Princeton University Princeton in Africa Fellowship Programmes
Princeton University is now accepting applications for the 2025 Princeton in Africa (PiAf) Fellowship Programmes, offering yearlong opportunities with various organizations across the African continent. This program is designed to foster cross-cultural collaboration, leadership development, and professional growth by placing talented individuals in positions where they can contribute to meaningful work in diverse fields.
The PiAf Fellowship is divided into two distinct programs:
1. General Fellowship Program:
- Open to candidates who have been educated at U.S.-accredited institutions.
- Fellows are placed in impactful roles within host organizations across Africa.
2. Nexus Fellowship Program:
- Specifically tailored for candidates who are educated and residing on the African continent.
- Each Nexus Fellow is paired with a General Fellow to work collaboratively within a host organization, promoting mutual learning and cross-cultural exchange.
Host Organizations and Fellowship Placement
Nexus applicants can only be considered for positions within Nexus-designated organizations, which are carefully selected based on their commitment to impactful work across Africa. Past Nexus host organizations include:
- African School of Economics, Benin (2023-24)
- Emerging Leaders Foundation Africa, Kenya (2023-24)
- International Livestock Research Institute (2024-25)
- International Rescue Committee, Kenya and Somalia (2023-24, 2024-25)
- Mpala Research Centre, Kenya (2023-24)
- Warc Africa, Ghana (2024-25)
These organizations are involved in various sectors such as education, healthcare, research, economic development, and humanitarian aid, providing Fellows with opportunities to contribute to significant projects while gaining valuable professional experience.
Eligibility Criteria
There are distinct eligibility criteria for the General Fellowship Program and the Nexus Fellowship Program:
General Fellowship Programmes Eligibility
- Applicants must be young professionals or current undergraduates graduating by June 2025.
- Must hold a bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. degree from a U.S.-accredited institution.
- Full professional proficiency in English is required, with additional preference for proficiency in French for specific posts.
- Applicants must be under 35 years of age as of August 2026.
- A valid passport through the end of the fellowship year (August 2026) is required.
Nexus Fellowship Programmes Eligibility
- Open to young professionals or undergraduates who will graduate by June 2025 from an African institution.
- Must have obtained an undergraduate or master’s degree (or equivalent) from an African university.
- Applicants must not be enrolled in any graduate or advanced academic programs during the fellowship year.
- Full professional proficiency in English is required, with a preference for proficiency in French for certain posts.
- Must be under 35 years of age as of August 2026 and possess a passport valid through the fellowship year.
- Nexus applicants must have citizenship in an African country and current residency in an African country (dual U.S. citizens are not eligible).
Fellowship Programmes Benefits
Fellows will receive extensive support during their fellowship year, including:
- On-the-ground expenses: Fellows are provided with housing and a living stipend to cover their daily needs.
- Visas and work permits: Assistance with securing necessary legal documentation for the duration of the fellowship.
- Medical and evacuation insurance: Coverage for medical expenses, as well as medical and security evacuations if necessary.
- Pre-departure orientation: A comprehensive orientation session to prepare Fellows for their roles, including housing and meals.
- Mid-year retreat in Africa: An opportunity for Fellows to regroup, reflect, and share experiences, with housing, meals, and partial travel allowances provided.
How to Apply
Interested applicants must submit their materials through the official Princeton in Africa application portal. The application package includes:
- Complete Online Application: All applicants must fill out and submit the online application form.
- Resume or CV: A concise, two-page document highlighting your educational background, work experience, and relevant skills.
- Unofficial Transcript: Must be uploaded to the online application. The transcript should be in English and in PDF format.
- Official Transcript: Must be sent directly from your university to the PiAf office via a secure online platform or email. This must also be accompanied by an English translation if necessary.
- Letter of Recommendation: One letter of recommendation must be submitted directly by your recommender through the provided online form.
- Proof of University Enrollment (Nexus Applicants Only): This can be in the form of an official enrollment verification, a scanned copy of your diploma, or a letter from a university official.
The deadline to submit your application for the 2025-26 Princeton in Africa Fellowship Programmes is October 27th, 2024. All materials must be submitted by this date to be considered for the program.
