About NIHR INSIGHT Research Masters Studentships 2024
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) has announced funding for the ‘INSIGHT: Inspiring Students into Research’ Studentships program, set to commence in summer 2024. This innovative three-year initiative is part of the NIHR Academy’s efforts to cultivate a highly skilled research workforce capable of advancing health and care research for the benefit of society and the economy.
The NIHR INSIGHT program for South West Central is part of a network of 12 regional programs and represents a collaboration between the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) and Bournemouth University. These institutions collectively cater to 6,000 pre-registration and 4,000 post-registration students across more than 15 health and care professions. The South West Central region encompasses :
- Gloucestershire
- Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire
- Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire
- Dorset
The program, which involves more than 20 co-collaborators from health and social care providers and NIHR organizations, aims to create collaborative partnerships and student networks throughout the region.
Eligible Fields
Undergraduate or graduate students pursuing registration and early career professionals registered with any of the following regulatory bodies (doctors and dentists excluded) are eligible to participate in the NIHR INSIGHT program.
- Academy for Healthcare Science
- General Chiropractic Council
- General Dental Council
- General Medical Council
- General Optical Council
- General Osteopathic Council
- General Pharmaceutical Council
- Health and Care Professions Council
- Nursing and Midwifery Council
- Social Work England
- UK Public Health Register
This covers allied health workers, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, healthcare scientists, social workers, and public health specialists.
Eligibility Criteria
Those in their early career stages who have completed their training and have up to five years of practice experience are eligible for these competitive awards.
Candidates must fulfil the following requirements:
- seeking registration with or progress toward one of the specified regulatory organisations.
- freshly graduated or possessing up to five years of experience working as a licensed health or care provider.
- Considering applying to UWE Bristol or Bournemouth University to pursue a master’s degree in research in health and care research.
- A bachelor’s honours degree in a relevant field with a 2:1 or better is normally necessary. A minimum of 12 months of relevant professional experience or equivalent qualifications may also be taken into consideration.
- An IELTS (Academic) score of at least 7.0 is necessary for non-native English speakers.
With opportunities to collaborate with external stakeholders and a robust support network, this adaptable, student-focused program develops leadership and research capacity.
Applicants’ application forms will determine which ones get an interview. A panel from South West Central will conduct online interviews and choose the winners of the Research Masters Studentships.
Benefits of the NIHR INSIGHT Research Masters Studentships 2024
The studentships cover tuition fees and provide a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£19,237 for full-time study and £9,619 for part-time study in 2024-2025). Both full-time and part-time studentships are available.
There will be a series of activities for students and early-career health and care professionals to become more familiar with research and its delivery. These activities will enhance their practice careers and showcase their research careers.
NIHR INSIGHT will be funding 30 research masters studentships annually in the South West Central region for the next three years.

Explore the MRes Health and Care Research program at UWE Bristol, designed to provide comprehensive training in health and care research methodologies and methods. The program emphasizes practical application to influence practice and policy, featuring mandatory modules (150 credits) and optional modules (30 credits). The student-centred approach blends traditional and online learning methods to offer a well-rounded educational experience.
Additionally, Bournemouth University is accepting applications for its MRes program starting in September 2024. The deadline for both applications is 5 pm on Wednesday, August 14th, 2024.
