About the Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro Medical Programme
The Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro Medical Programme (NMFCMP) is a unique and life-changing opportunity for aspiring medical students from disadvantaged communities in South Africa. This prestigious initiative provides young, talented individuals with a fully funded chance to pursue a degree in Medicine in Cuba—one of the world’s leading nations in healthcare and medical education. The 2025 intake is now open for applications, and students from across South Africa who meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to apply.
Launched through a bilateral agreement between South Africa and Cuba, the Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro Medical Programme was established to address the shortage of doctors in underprivileged communities across South Africa. Since its inception, the programme has offered thousands of South African students the opportunity to receive world-class medical training in Cuba’s renowned institutions.
The Gauteng Department of Health continues to champion this program by identifying deserving candidates—particularly from impoverished or rural areas—who demonstrate academic excellence, commitment to public service, and a passion for healthcare. The training in Cuba includes both theoretical and practical components, enabling students to return to South Africa as competent, well-rounded medical professionals capable of making meaningful contributions to the national health system.
