Introduction to the Coimbra Group University Young African Scholarship Program 2024

Applications for the 2024 Coimbra Group University Young African Scholarship Program are now open. The Coimbra Group Universities have been offering researchers from Sub-Saharan African universities the opportunity to spend a brief period, generally 1 to 3 months, at a Coimbra Group University to conduct a part of their research since 2008.

The Scholarship Programme for Young Researchers from the European Neighbourhood enables applicants from all African countries, except for Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia, to be eligible for this program. The Coimbra Group, founded in 1987, is an organization made up of 40 European universities with the goal of increasing cooperation among members by enhancing academic and cultural ties and creating channels for information and exchange.

The primary objectives of this scholarship program are to support scholars in expanding academic and research connections throughout Europe and to enable them to continue their research projects at their home institutions. The administrative administration of the applications is the responsibility of the Coimbra Group Office, while the participating Coimbra Group member universities provide financial support for the scholarships. The selection of candidates is directly made by the host universities, who may request additional documents.

Upon agreement, the host university may directly send a letter of invitation to the successful candidate. In the application form, applicants should identify a research supervisor at the selected host university and provide his/her name and contact information.

Additionally, applicants are expected to contact their research supervisor at the selected host university and submit a letter or email of acceptance, which proves that the candidate has been accepted to carry out research under his/her supervision. The letter must clearly state the tutor’s willingness to supervise the candidate’s work during the research stay. This letter should be uploaded to the application form. Applications that do not fulfil this requirement will not be considered. The Coimbra Group Office is unable to assist with finding a supervisor.

The following Coimbra Group universities are participating in the 2024 edition of this scholarship programme: University of Barcelona (Spain), University of Coimbra (Portugal), University of Cologne (Germany), Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), University of Granada (Spain), University of Graz (Austria), University of Groningen (The Netherlands), Istanbul University (Turkey), Jagiellonian University in Krakow (Poland), Leiden University (The Netherlands), University of Padova (Italy), University of Pavia (Italy), University of Poitiers (France), Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic), University of Salamanca (Spain), University of Siena (Italy), University of Turku (Finland)  and University of Würzburg (Germany).
