About the University Of Memphis Graduate Assistantships
Applications are now open for the University of Memphis Graduate Assistantships 2024-2025 for International Students. In most academic departments at the University of Memphis, there are graduate teaching and research assistantships available. These positions require three to twenty hours of work each week. The student’s home academic unit provides the majority of assistantships. For more details, get in touch with the department directly. Make sure you go over what a graduate assistant is expected to do. To be eligible for an appointment as a graduate assistant, a student must be accepted into a graduate program.
Eligibility Criteria for the University Of Memphis Graduate Assistantships
- A student must be admitted into a graduate academic program to be eligible for an appointment as a graduate assistant.
- Graduate teaching assistants must have a master’s in the teaching discipline or 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline.
- GAs must have direct supervision by a faculty member experienced in the teaching discipline, regular in-service training, and planned and periodic evaluations.
- Non-native English speakers must also pass the SPEAK test before they can be appointed teaching assistants
- Graduate assistants must maintain a 3.00 GPA to retain their assistantships.
Graduate Assistantships Responsibilities
- Be sure you have a copy of your contract and fully understand its terms.
- Graduate assistant contracts generally require GAs to work a maximum of 20 hours per week for the department generating the contract. GA contract originators may request hours exceeding 20 per week by submitting their contracts to the Graduate School as exceptions.
- You must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average to continue as a graduate assistant.
- In order for your tuition and fees to be paid, your contract must reach the graduate school by the 4th day of classes. It is essential that you provide the department with all relevant information as soon as possible.
- When the University and Student Business Services Office processes your contract, they pay your tuition and fees. Any services (such as parking, financial aid, or the recreation center) that are contingent upon payment of fees have to wait for your contract to reach that office.

- If you have financial aid, you need to notify the Financial Aid Office because the amount of your loan may need to be adjusted.
- If you are receiving federal work study as part of your stipend, be sure you fully understand the implications. See the Financial Aid Office or the Graduate School for details.
If you are a non-resident alien:
- You must apply for a social security number as soon as possible.
- You must give Human Resources a copy of your social security number.
- After obtaining your social security number, you must see Ms. Senese Duhart, Administration Building 276, to complete a Form W-4 for tax purposes.
- All GAs must complete an I-9 prior to beginning any work.
Benefits of the University of Memphis Graduate Assistantships
To be eligible for the role of a graduate teaching assistant, one must possess a master’s degree in the teaching discipline or have completed at least 18 graduate credit hours in that field. In addition, GAs must receive direct guidance from a faculty member who has significant experience in the teaching discipline, undergo regular in-service training, and receive planned and periodic evaluations to ensure their effectiveness in the role. Furthermore, if a non-native English speaker wants to be appointed as a teaching assistant, they must first pass the SPEAK test to demonstrate their proficiency in the language.
