About the University of Essex Africa Postgraduate Scholarship

If you’re an African student dreaming of earning a master’s degree in the United Kingdom, the University of Essex is offering a unique opportunity through its Africa Postgraduate Scholarship for the 2025–2026 academic year. This scholarship aims to support self-funding African Union nationals who wish to pursue postgraduate studies at Essex, providing substantial tuition fee discounts without the need for a separate application.

The Africa Postgraduate Scholarship 2025–26 is a merit-based tuition discount offered by the University of Essex to international students from African Union member states. It is awarded to those who have demonstrated academic excellence in their undergraduate studies and are fully self-funding their postgraduate education.

All eligible students applying for an eligible master’s degree at Essex will be automatically considered for the award—there’s no need to submit a separate scholarship application. The scholarship applies only to the first year of a full-time taught master’s program starting in October 2025 or January 2026.

Eligible Fields

Students applying to the following postgraduate programs at the University of Essex are eligible for this scholarship:

  • MA (Master of Arts)
  • MSc (Master of Science)
  • LLM (Master of Laws)
  • MFA (Master of Fine Arts)
  • MPP (Master of Public Policy)
  • MBM (Master of Business Management)

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the University of Essex Africa Scholarship 2025–26, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be classified as international students for tuition fee purposes (overseas fee payers).
  • Must be entirely self-funded. Students receiving repayable loans may still be considered as self-funded.
  • Must be ordinarily resident in an African Union member state.
  • Must have earned an undergraduate degree (including integrated master’s degrees) with a grade that meets or exceeds the specified requirement for their country.
  • Must register for the first year of a full-time master’s program at the University of Essex in October 2025 or January 2026.
  • The scholarship applies only to the first year of study and cannot be combined with any other University of Essex scholarships or fee discounts.
  • Students joining Essex through a link agreement with discounted tuition will receive whichever award is of greater value.
  • Applicants must be willing to participate in promotional activities if selected.

Note: Postgraduate qualifications (excluding integrated master’s) cannot be used to meet the eligibility requirements.

Selection Criteria

The scholarship is awarded automatically based on academic merit, specifically the grades earned in the undergraduate degree. Applicants do not need to submit a separate scholarship application.

The University of Essex will evaluate candidates based on the transcripts and degree certificates submitted during the admissions process. The selection focuses on meeting the country-specific academic thresholds set by the university.

Eligible Countries

The scholarship is open to nationals of all African Union member states who meet the residency and academic criteria.

How to Apply

There is no need to submit a separate scholarship application. If you meet the eligibility criteria and apply for an eligible course, you will automatically be considered for the award.
