Introduction to the UNHCR University Corridors for Refugees (UNICORE) Award 2024

Applications are now open for the UNHCR University Corridors for Refugees Award 2024. The UNICORE initiative has announced that there are 68 scholarships available for refugees who are currently residing in nine African countries: Kenya, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. These scholarships will be awarded to eligible students who wish to pursue a higher education degree at one of 41 Italian universities.

The Florence School of Transnational Governance (STG) is one of the universities offering scholarships for the two-year Master in Transnational Governance programme, which begins in September 2024. This particular program has only one scholarship award available, and the student who receives it will have a tremendous opportunity to further their education and career prospects.

Professor Emma Lees, the Director of the Master in Transnational Governance programme, has expressed her delight in supporting the UNICORE initiative’s priority to bridge the education gap for refugees. She believes that education has the power to transform lives, and the Florence STG is committed to providing an inclusive learning environment that welcomes diverse perspectives and experiences.

UNICORE has already awarded over 250 scholarships to individuals from various African countries experiencing conflict and displacement since its launch in 2019. With participation from 45 universities in Italy, this initiative has made a significant impact on the lives of those seeking higher education opportunities.

Eligibility Criteria

The application requirements for the program are clearly stated in the calls that are published by each of the participating universities. These calls are based on an agreed format, ensuring fairness and equal opportunities for all candidates. Candidates from Kenya, Niger, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe are eligible to apply for the program. Each university offers a variety of study courses from its own academic offerings, allowing candidates to choose the course that best suits their academic interests and career goals.

Benefits of the UNICORE Award

The initiative that we are referring to is designed to assist students who are arriving in Italy by providing them with various benefits. These benefits include a monthly scholarship from Sapienza, which is an esteemed Italian university, as well as orientation and academic tutoring to help them settle in and excel in their studies. Additionally, students can take advantage of free transport and accommodation, teaching materials, computers, telephones, SIM cards, legal assistance, and listening spaces.

Furthermore, UNICORE Award recipients, which is an award program for international students, have access to the Sapienza’s extensive network of contacts and resources, as well as to its academic and research facilities. They can also participate in social and cultural activities that are organized by the university and connect with and network with other UNICORE Award recipients.

This award is an excellent opportunity for students who are coming to Italy to study, as it provides them with a comprehensive support system that helps them succeed academically and integrate into Italian society.
