About the United Nations Talent Pipeline Programme

The UN Talent Pipeline Programme is a prestigious initiative aimed at strengthening the representation of professionals from developing countries that are underrepresented or unrepresented in the UN Secretariat workforce. This program offers selected candidates the tools and support they need to succeed in UN recruitment processes and long-term UN careers.

Launched with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, the program contributes directly to Sustainable Development Goal 16.8, which advocates for the inclusion and equitable representation of developing countries in institutions of global governance.

Through targeted capacity building, personalized mentorship, and a robust training curriculum, participants will significantly enhance their understanding of UN recruitment practices and career pathways.

Eligible Fields

This capacity-building program is designed for professionals with academic and professional backgrounds relevant to current and future UN needs. Fields include (but are not limited to):

  • Political Science and International Relations
  • Public Policy and Administration
  • Peace and Conflict Studies
  • International Development
  • Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs
  • Environmental Studies and Climate Change
  • Law and Legal Affairs
  • Economics and Social Sciences
  • Public Health
  • Gender Studies
  • Information and Communication Technology
  • Engineering (Civil, Environmental, etc.)
  • Logistics and Operations Management

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the UN Talent Pipeline Programme 2025, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Nationality: Must be a national of a UN Member State that is underrepresented or unrepresented in the UN Secretariat (see list below).
  • Education: Hold at least a Master’s degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or a Bachelor’s degree with at least 7 years of experience.
  • Language Proficiency: Must possess at least an intermediate level of English proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Knowledge of additional UN official languages is an asset.
  • Professional Background: Must have work experience in fields relevant to the UN system (see eligible fields).
  • Current Employment: Must NOT be a current UN Secretariat staff member. However, personnel from UN Funds, Programmes, and Specialized Agencies are eligible to apply.
  • Commitment: Must be willing to participate in the full training cycle, dedicating approximately 3–5 hours per month for 3–6 months.

Candidates will be selected based on the following:

  • Academic and professional qualifications relevant to UN careers
  • Quality and clarity of motivation to work with the UN
  • Alignment of background with the program’s goals to increase diversity in the Secretariat
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership, innovation, and potential for future contribution to international governance
  • Language proficiency and communication skills
  • Willingness to actively participate in all components of the program

Eligible Countries

Applicants must come from developing countries that are classified as unrepresented or underrepresented in the United Nations Secretariat. These typically include nations from:

  • Sub-Saharan Africa
  • South Asia
  • Southeast Asia
  • Central Asia
  • The Pacific Islands
  • The Caribbean
  • Latin America
  • The Middle East and North Africa
