About the PTDF Overseas Masters and PhD Scholarships

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) is inviting qualified Nigerians to apply for its 2025/2026 Overseas Postgraduate Scholarships. This scholarship is designed to build capacity in the oil and gas industry through advanced education in selected partner universities across the UK, Germany, France, and Malaysia.

Applications are currently open and will close on 28th May 2025.

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund is a Federal Government agency tasked with developing indigenous human capacity and petroleum technology to meet the needs of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. Through this overseas scholarship scheme, PTDF offers fully funded MSc and PhD scholarships to exceptional candidates to pursue studies at strategic institutions abroad. These institutions are chosen to maintain high academic standards and align with the PTDF’s mandate.

The scholarship is for the 2025/2026 academic session and will cover studies in PTDF-approved universities only.

Selected applicants will undertake their studies in one of the PTDF partner countries:

  • United Kingdom
  • Germany
  • France
  • Malaysia

Eligible Fields

The specific eligible courses are listed on the PTDF Scholarship Portal. Applicants must ensure their proposed course of study is available at a PTDF-approved institution and aligns with the agency’s focus areas.

Eligibility Criteria

For MSc Applicants:

  • Minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) in their first degree or Second Class Lower (2.2) with relevant industry experience.
  • Must have completed the mandatory NYSC (National Youth Service Corps).
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Possession of 5 O’level credits, including English Language.

For PhD Applicants:

  • Must have completed the mandatory NYSC.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Minimum of Second Class Lower (2.2) in their first degree and a strong second-degree certificate (MSc).
  • Must submit a research proposal (maximum 5 pages) relevant to the oil and gas industry, covering:
    • Research Topic
    • Introduction
    • Objectives
    • Methodology
    • Data collection methods
      (A sample template is available on the PTDF portal.)
  • Must include their Master’s thesis/project.

Selection Criteria

PTDF scholarships are highly competitive. The selection process involves a thorough review of all applications based on:

  • Academic performance (degree class, transcripts, additional qualifications)
  • Relevance and quality of research proposals (PhD only)
  • Membership of relevant professional bodies
  • Quality and viability of the study plan
  • Applicant’s statement of purpose (maximum 500 words) explaining:
    • Motivation for the study
    • Relevance to the oil and gas sector
    • Anticipated contribution to national development

  • First Degree Certificate or Statement of Result
  • NYSC Discharge Certificate
  • WAEC/GCE/SSCE/NECO Results
  • Local Government Identification Letter
  • Master’s Degree Certificate (for PhD applicants only)
  • Evidence of Professional Membership (if applicable)

Note:

  • Past PTDF scholarship beneficiaries are not eligible for the same degree level again.
  • Applicants with a higher degree than the one being applied for are not eligible.
  • Candidates currently on another scholarship are not eligible.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit their academic transcripts.
