Are you a young anaesthesiologist in Africa looking to deepen your expertise and specialize in paediatric anaesthesia? This is your opportunity.

Applications are now open for the prestigious 2025/2026 Paediatric Anaesthesia Fellowship in Nairobi, Kenya. This 12-month training program is fully funded and provides an excellent chance to receive advanced, hands-on paediatric anaesthesia training under the mentorship of experienced faculty. Successful fellows will not only benefit from full tuition support but also free accommodation and monthly living expenses throughout the training period.

Offered by the University of Nairobi (UoN) in collaboration with the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA), this fellowship is designed to address the critical need for trained paediatric anaesthesiologists across the African continent.

Up to three fellows will be selected for the 2025/2026 cohort, which begins in September or October 2025. The fellows will be based at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya’s largest referral and teaching hospital. Rotations will include exposure to various hospitals and health centres across Kenya where active paediatric surgery takes place.

The programme includes:

The fellowship is structured to equip graduates with the practical and theoretical knowledge required to become leaders in paediatric anaesthesia in their home countries.

Eligible Fields

This fellowship focuses exclusively on Paediatric Anaesthesia and is available to qualified physician anaesthesiologists only.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Paediatric Anaesthesia Fellowship, applicants must meet the following conditions:

  • Be a qualified physician anaesthesiologist and a registered medical practitioner in their home country.
  • Be eligible for registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
  • Be preferably early in their career, working in a teaching hospital.
  • Be committed to returning to their home country to a recognized position in anaesthesia following completion of the fellowship.
  • Be supported by:
    • Their national anaesthesiology society (which must be a member of WFSA)
    • Their current hospital or department head

Geographic preference will be given to candidates from Kenya and Central or Eastern African countries, although all African nations are welcome to apply.

Selection Criteria

A selection panel consisting of experienced anaesthesiologists appointed by the WFSA will review and shortlist applications. Selection will be based on:

  • Academic qualifications and clinical experience
  • Professional references and letters of support
  • Commitment to return and contribute to healthcare in their home country
  • Demonstrated interest in paediatric anaesthesia and education

Shortlisted applicants will be notified in July 2025. Selected fellows must confirm acceptance of the scholarship within two days of receiving the offer. If a candidate fails to respond within this window, the offer will be withdrawn and passed to the next eligible candidate.

Documents Required

Applicants must submit a complete online application with the following certified and verified documentation:

  1. Completed online application (available on the WFSA or UoN platform)
  2. Certified copy of undergraduate medical degree
  3. Certified copy of anaesthesia specialisation/fellowship certificate
  4. Certified academic transcripts for both medical and anaesthesia degrees
  5. Verification of all degrees not obtained in Kenya by the Kenya Commission for University Education (CUE)
  6. Certified high school certificates, verified by:
    • Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA)
    • Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC)
  7. Certificate of good standing from the registering authority in your country
  8. Valid police clearance certificate
  9. Proof of Yellow Fever vaccination
  10. Proof of Hepatitis B vaccination

Important Note: All documents not in English must be translated officially into English by an authorized translation service. Incomplete applications or missing documentation will lead to automatic disqualification due to the strict University of Nairobi admissions policy.

Eligible Countries

While all African countries are eligible, priority will be given to applicants from:

  • Kenya
  • Eastern Africa
  • Central Africa

This focus aims to strengthen anaesthesia services in regions with the greatest need for paediatric specialists.

  • Upload all necessary, certified and verified documents as outlined above

Note: The application deadline is 30th June 2025.

All interested candidates are advised to begin the application process early to ensure they gather and certify the many required documents well ahead of time. Late applications or those missing necessary paperwork will not be considered.
