IMF Economist Program – Eligibility Requirements

To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Educational Qualification

Hold or be about to complete a PhD in economics or related fields such as macroeconomics, finance, public finance, monetary economics, trade, political economy, econometrics, macro-climate economics, or poverty-related research.

Core Competencies

Strong understanding of macroeconomics and ability to connect complex economic concepts with real-world applications.
Excellent academic record with proven analytical, quantitative, and IT skills.

Nationality

Must be a national of an IMF member country.

Age Requirement

Applicants must be under the age of 34 at the start of the program (September 8, 2025).

Communication Skills

Strong written and oral English skills (no IELTS required).

Selection Process – IMF Economist Program 2026

The application and selection process includes:

Application Review & Shortlisting
Applications will be reviewed for eligibility, academic excellence, and relevant research background.

Preliminary Interview

Conducted on university campuses or virtually.
Includes review of transcripts and references.
Panel Interview & Writing Test
Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a panel interview, which includes a writing test and evaluation of the applicant’s job market paper.
Final Selection & Offer
Final offers will be made in early February 2025 for program start in September 2025 at the IMF Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
