About the MEXT IGP Special Quota Scholarship

The MEXT IGP Special Quota Scholarship 2026 at Hokkaido University is now accepting applications for Master’s and PhD students from around the world! This prestigious scholarship, offered by the Japanese Government through the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), is part of the International Graduate Program (IGP) for the October 2026 intake.

This is a fully funded opportunity tailored for international students with strong academic backgrounds and a passion for biosystems science.

The MEXT IGP Special Quota is designed to support 3 Master’s students and 5 Doctoral students who wish to enroll in the Graduate School of Life Science at Hokkaido University. Selected students will be admitted to the Biosystems Science Course, a program that blends advanced biotechnology, life sciences, molecular biology, and systems biology to solve global challenges in health, agriculture, and the environment.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan
  • Hold (or be expected to hold) a bachelor’s degree by October 2026
  • Be under 35 years old as of April 1, 2026
  • Demonstrate strong academic performance and research potential
  • Be proficient in English (TOEFL/IELTS recommended but not mandatory for all applicants)
  • Be in good physical and mental health to pursue graduate studies in Japan

Selection Criteria

The selection process involves several stages:

  1. Identify a laboratory that aligns with your research interests.
  2. Contact the professor directly to discuss your interest and obtain consent.
  3. Prepare all required documents and submit them to the professor.
  4. The professor (supervisor) will then submit the documents to the IGP Office by December 10, 2025.
  5. Applications are reviewed and nominated by the department.
  6. Final selection is made by MEXT Japan.

Note: Direct contact with a potential supervisor is essential. Applications without prior consent will not be considered.

Eligible Countries

All international students from countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan are eligible to apply. This includes nearly every country globally.

  4. Submit all required documents (as instructed by your supervisor) to them well in advance.
  5. Your supervisor must submit your complete application to the IGP Office no later than December 10, 2025.
