Introduction to the Young Champions of The Earth Awards 2024

Applications for the UN Environment program-tagged Young Champions of the Earth awards are now open! You can become a Young Champion of the Earth if you have an optimistic outlook for the planet’s future! The Young Champions of the Earth Award is a progressive accolade intended to ignite the aspirations of exceptional young environmentalists. UNEP is searching for innovators—people who see possibilities where others perceive problems.

A premier youth engagement program of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is called Young Champions of the Earth. Every year, the prize is given to deserving young people with exceptional environmental protection and restoration ideas from all over the world.

Young Champions of the Earth will be chosen in 2024, with one representative chosen from each of the following continents: Europe, North America, West Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia and the Pacific. The 2024 Young Champions of the Earth will be required to share their journeys through videos and blogs on this website for up to one year. You are eligible to apply if you will be between the ages of 18 and 30 on December 31, 2024, and you have at least six months of experience working on a big idea to protect or restore the environment.

The six regions in which UNEP works are Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific, North America, and West Asia. The part of the world in which you compete for the prize depends on where you currently reside. The Young Champions of the Earth prize seeks to develop the following generation of environmental leaders, not merely to bestow an honorary title. Candidates who show a strong desire to learn will have access to a network of experts and entrepreneurs who share their values, as well as opportunities for skill development and mentoring.

In the first stage of the selection process, all applications will be judged by United Nations experts according to the following criteria:

  • The 3 Ps – The positive impact your big idea could have on the environment (planet), society (people) and its financial viability (prosperity).
  • The 3 Cs – Evidence that you are a curious, courageous and colourful individual.
  • Demonstrated commitment – It is important that you have already attempted to implement your big idea for at least six months and can outline achievements and developments to date.
  • Endorsement – The strength of your referee’s recommendation.
