Are you a student from Sub-Saharan Africa looking to pursue a Master’s degree scholarship in Plant Breeding? The West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), in collaboration with DAAD, is offering a limited number of scholarships for the 2025 intake. This prestigious opportunity is available for students who want to further their education in the Master of Philosophy in Seed Science and Technology at the University of Ghana. Through this scholarship program, DAAD will support up to 3 In-Country and 6 In-Region students, helping them achieve their academic and professional goals in agriculture.

Eligible Countries

This scholarship is specifically for nationals of Sub-Saharan African countries, giving students from across the region the chance to benefit from a world-class education in Ghana.

The scholarships will be taken at the University of Ghana, one of the leading institutions in West Africa, renowned for its agricultural programs.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the WACCI Masters Plant Breeding Scholarships, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Academic Qualifications: Applicants must be graduates with a first academic degree (typically a three-year university degree) and must have achieved above-average results (at least a Second Class Upper Division or equivalent).
  • Academic Achievement: Candidates with less than a Second Class Upper Division will not be eligible to apply.
  • Commitment and Motivation: Applicants must demonstrate a clear commitment to the field of study, showcasing a strong motivation to contribute to the improvement of crop science and seed technology in their respective countries.
  • Language Proficiency: As the language of instruction is English, candidates must have a good command of the language to succeed in the program.
  • Recent Graduates: Applicants must have completed their most recent university degree no longer than six years ago at the time of applying for this scholarship.
  • Residency and Nationality: This scholarship is open to nationals or permanent residents of Sub-Saharan African countries.
  • Professional Background: Priority will be given to:
  • Staff members of public universities,
  • Candidates considered for teaching or research staff positions,
  • Public sector employees, and
  • Alumni of the DAFI-programme.
  • Encouraged Applicants: Female candidates, refugees with recognized refugee status, and individuals from underprivileged regions or groups are particularly encouraged to apply for this scholarship.

Important Note:

If you have previously received a Master’s scholarship from DAAD, you are not eligible to receive another Master’s scholarship from DAAD

Benefits of the WACCI Masters Plant Breeding Scholarships 2025

The WACCI Masters Plant Breeding Scholarships offer comprehensive financial support, covering a range of expenses:

  1. Tuition Fees: Full coverage of annual tuition fees.
  2. Study and Research Allowance: An annual allowance to support study and research activities.
  3. Printing Allowance: A one-time allowance to cover printing expenses at the end of the program.
  4. Monthly Living Allowance:
  • In-Country Master’s students will receive 500 EUR per month.
  • In-Region Master’s students will receive 550 EUR per month.
  1. Travel Allowance: In-Region students are eligible for a travel allowance, covering trips at the beginning and end of the scholarship.
  2. Health Insurance: In-Region students will also receive health insurance coverage throughout their studies.

  1. Visit the DAAD Scholarship Portal: Begin your application by registering on the DAAD portal. Ensure you have all the necessary documents before starting the process.

  • A detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV),
  • A Motivation Letter (1-2 pages) explaining your interest in the program and how it aligns with your career goals,
  • Certified University Transcripts and Degree Certificates,
  • A Recommendation Letter from a university professor or lecturer,
  • A Research Proposal for your Master’s thesis, outlining the title, background, problem statement, objectives, and methodology,

  • For In-Region applicants, proof of degree recognition from your home country’s educational authority.
