About the University of the West Indies (UWI) £3,000 PhD Scholarship
The University of the West Indies (UWI) and the University of Glasgow have partnered to offer a unique PhD scholarship for the 2025/2026 academic year. Administered through the College of Social Sciences (CoSS), this scholarship is a part of the Glasgow-Caribbean Centre for Development Research (GCCDR). The initiative was established in 2019 with the mission to foster joint research on critical topics that impact Caribbean nations and promote deeper collaboration between these universities. This scholarship provides an excellent opportunity for students, staff, and alumni from the Commonwealth Caribbean who are part of the UWI community to pursue PhD research in topics relevant to the Caribbean.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be:
- Citizens of a Commonwealth Caribbean country
- Current students, staff members, or alumni of the University of the West Indies (UWI)
Selection Process
The selection process is managed by a joint panel of representatives from the University of Glasgow’s College of Social Sciences and the University of the West Indies. This panel will assess each application based on:
- Relevance of the research proposal to issues facing Caribbean nations.
- Feasibility of the project to be completed within the funded 3-year period.
- Alignment with both UWI and UofG’s research priorities as part of the GCCDR’s mission.
Benefits of the University of the West Indies (UWI) £3,000 PhD Scholarship
Recipients of the scholarship will receive comprehensive funding that includes:
- A stipend at the UKRI standard level to cover living expenses.
- 100% tuition fee waiver for the entire PhD program.
- A Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) of up to £940 per year to support necessary training or research expenses.
- £3,000 annually dedicated to facilitating collaborative work and communication between UWI and University of Glasgow supervisors.
This funding aims to support the financial and academic needs of the recipient, enabling them to fully focus on their research.
How to Apply
Prospective candidates should note that project proposals must be submitted by January 31, 2025. The application process involves collaboration between supervisors at both universities:
- UofG and UWI supervisors must work together to design a PhD research proposal that aligns with the GCCDR’s objectives and can be completed within three years.
- Submit the proposal to the College of Social Sciences at the University of Glasgow, following the guidelines provided.
