About the UN Multimedia Librarian/Archivist Internship Program

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is the most inclusive intergovernmental platform in the Asia-Pacific region of the United Nations. The Commission promotes cooperation among its 53 member States and 9 associate members in pursuit of solutions to sustainable development challenges. 

This position is located in the Communications and Knowledge Management Section (CKMS), in the Office of the Deputy Executive Secretary for Programme Support (ODESPS). The intern works under the supervision of the Chief of CKMS, Public Information Officers, and Librarian. This internship is unpaid for a minimum 3 and maximum of 6 months and designed to be full-time (37.5 hours per week). The duration and modality can be adjusted on request of the successful candidate. 

Responsibility Of Interns

Interns will gain first-hand experience with regard to the activities of ESCAP in strategic communications, public information, digital outreach, website and knowledge management. 

UN Multimedia Librarian/Archivist Internship Program role is to provide assistance on the following;

  • improving ESCAP’s audio-visual library and archives by carrying out the following responsibilities:    
  • Assisting in the curation, digitization, indexing and archiving of multimedia materials
  • Adding and improving metadata and metadata schemes for audio-visual records and files 
  • Assisting in ongoing improvements to, and maintenance of, content management systems, databases, spreadsheets and other organizational tools for improved searching of audio-visual materials 
  • Processing and/or cataloging archival collections 
  • Assisting in digital media asset management and tangible and intangible UN media preservation 
  • Researching people or events covered by a collection 
  • Initiating and carrying out other assigned tasks/special projects.

Skills Needed For The UN Multimedia Librarian/Archivist Internship Program

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: 

Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme in a library science, audio-visual archives, communications, information science, media studies, journalism, or related field (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); 

Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme in a library science, audio-visual archives, communications, information science, media studies, journalism, or related field (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Applicants to the The UN Multimedia Librarian/Archivist Internship Program are not required to have professional work experience. 

However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. 

Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, including MS Office, social media and multimedia applications. Knowledge of or experience working with online repositories, integrated library systems, digital asset management systems or similar tools is desirable. 

Candidates for the UN Internship Programme are required to cover the cost of travel including visa, accommodation, health insurance and other living expenses for the duration of the internship.  Will you be able to cover all the above-mentioned expenses?

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
