Introduction to the University of Pretoria Scholarships for Masters in Human Rights and Democratization
Applications are now open for the University of Pretoria Scholarships for Masters in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa. The LLM/MPhil in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa (HRDA) is a prestigious one-year intensive course where 25–30 exceptional individuals spend six months in Pretoria and six months at one of the 12 partner universities all over Africa.
They participate in numerous hands-on training exercises and receive instruction from distinguished human rights lecturers. In Africa, it is the only course of its kind. Graduating students join the HRDA Alumni Association, whose 537 members are presently engaged in a wide range of human rights activities, from community-based to civil service to global organizations like the UN and the African Union. The Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa, is inviting people from all African nations to apply for admission to study for a Master’s degree (LLM/MPhil) in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa.
A unique program, the LLM/MPhil in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa admits 25 to 30 African nationals with the following degrees and, ideally, prior experience in the field of human rights:
- Law students: A degree allowing access to the legal profession (eg LLB or licence en droit)
- Other students (non-law students): At least an honors degree in a discipline relevant to human rights and democratisation
During an intensive one-year course, they are taught by eminent lecturers in the field of human rights and gain invaluable practical exposure. It is the only course of its kind in Africa.
Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria for the LLM/MPhil (HRDA) are as follows:
- Law students (LLM option):
A degree allowing access to the legal profession - Non-law students (MPhil option):
An honors degree in a discipline relevant to human rights and democratisation
Applicants must have excellent academic credentials and demonstrate human rights experience or interest. Women, as well as members of minority groups such as indigenous people, LGBTI persons, and persons with disabilities, are particularly encouraged to apply.
Benefits of the Scholarship
There are scholarships available from the European Union up to $15,000 USD. The scholarships will pay for living expenses, tuition, and other pertinent costs. Successful applicants will receive scholarships based on merit, which may be awarded throughout the duration of the scholarships. Scholarships will be given out based on the order in which applications are received.
How to Apply
- Individuals from all African countries are invited to apply for admission to study for the Master’s Degree (LLM/MPhil) in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa.
- Applicants must have a first degree in law (LLB, licence en droit, or license em direito) or an honors degree relevant to human rights and democratisation.
- All documents uploaded must be typewritten.
- The following documents will be requested during your application:
- Previous academic records/transcripts
- Previous degree certificate(s)
- Copy of bio-data page of passport
- A good-quality photograph of yourself
- For applicants who did not obtain their qualifications in English: TOEFL, SAT1, or IELTS test certificate.
