About the SASTE Grant 4 Scholarship 2025

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the SASTE Grant 4 Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be postdoctoral scientists under the age of 42 (or 45 for women with childcare responsibilities).
  • Hold a research position in an African institution, ensuring their return post-scholarship.
  • Have research experience in one of the eligible fields.
  • Preferably hold a PhD earned outside Austria (not mandatory).
  • Not have studied or worked in Austria within the six months before applying.
  • Possess 3 to 7 years of postdoctoral experience in a university or research organization in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Have a contract with their home institution valid for at least two years post-research stay.
  • Provide a confirmation letter from both their home institution and the Austrian host institution agreeing to support their research.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English or German.

Required Application Documents

Candidates must submit the following:

  • Research Proposal (6–10 pages): Detailed project outline, methodology, relevance, and expected impact.
  • Motivation Letter (up to 2 pages): Justification for applying and career aspirations.
  • Curriculum Vitae: Including a list of publications and professional achievements.
  • Employment Confirmation: Proof of at least two years of employment post-scholarship.
  • Recommendation Letter: From the head of the applicant’s home institution.
  • Host Institution Letter: Confirmation from an Austrian supervisor accepting the applicant and providing necessary facilities.
  • In-Kind Contribution Confirmation: Documented support from the home institution (e.g., fieldwork assistance, equipment, etc.).
  • Disclosure of Additional Funding—If applicable.
  • Identity Documents: Passport, birth certificate, and judicial record extract.

Benefits of the SASTE Grant 4 Scholarship

The SASTE Grant provides comprehensive support, including:

  • Duration: Research stay of 12 to 24 months (non-extendable).
  • Monthly Stipend: €1,500 for living expenses.
  • Housing Allowance: Up to €600 per month.
  • Travel Budget: Up to €3,000 per year for scientific visits and conferences.
  • Institutional Support: €2,500 per year allocated to the Austrian host institution for research-related expenses.
  • Fieldwork Support: Additional in-kind contributions from the home institution.
