About the Nordic Africa Institute’s African Scholarship Programme
The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) invites applications for the 2026 African Scholarship Programme, a prestigious initiative to support early career researchers based in Africa. This program allows scholars to develop their research projects in an intellectually stimulating environment at NAI’s headquarters in Uppsala, Sweden.
The scholarship is specifically tailored for doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers who are engaged in Africa-focused research within the Social Sciences and Humanities. Through this program, scholars gain access to world-class research facilities, including NAI’s extensive library, networking opportunities with leading researchers, and academic mentorship.
The primary aim of the scholarship is to strengthen knowledge production in Africa while fostering collaborative relationships between African and Nordic research communities. The program also aligns with the core principles of the UN Agenda 2030, ensuring that selected research projects contribute to sustainable development goals.
Scholars selected for this program will have the unique opportunity to present their research, engage with Nordic institutions, and build meaningful professional connections that can advance their academic careers.
Eligibility Criteria
The African Scholarship Programme is open to early-career researchers based in Africa whose research aligns with the Social Sciences and Humanities, with a focus on contemporary African issues. Eligible applicants must fall into one of the following categories:
- Doctoral Candidates
- Must be full-time staff members at an African-based university or research center.
- Must be enrolled in a PhD program within Africa.
- Should not have access to an international scholarship.
- Postdoctoral Researchers
- Must have completed their PhD within the last five years.
The Institute strives for gender balance and regional diversity in the selection process.
Benefits of the Nordic Africa Institute’s African Scholarship Programme
Selected scholars will receive comprehensive support, including:
- A fully funded research stay at the Nordic Africa Institute in Sweden.
- Round-trip airfare (economy class).
- Accommodation in Uppsala.
- Daily subsistence allowance of 400 SEK (approximately 40 USD per day).
- One-time installation grant of 2,500 SEK (approximately 250 USD).
- Access to a dedicated workspace, including a shared office and desktop computer.
- Full access to NAI’s specialized library, focusing on contemporary African research in the Social Sciences.
- Access to Uppsala University Library and the Library of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
- Opportunities to present research at NAI and visit other Nordic research institutions.
Note: The daily subsistence allowance is only provided for days spent in Uppsala.
Duration of the Scholarship
- The minimum duration of the research stay is 60 days.
- The maximum duration is 90 days.
- Scholars cannot schedule their visit during these periods due to limited institutional operations:
- June 15 – August 15 (Summer break).
- December 15 – January 15 (Winter break).
How to Apply
Applicants must complete an online application and upload the following required documents:
- Updated CV (including a list of publications, if available).
- Outline of the Research Project (5 pages) containing:
- A detailed research proposal.
- Work Plan (1 page) that specifies:
- Research objectives and expected results for the duration of the stay.
- Reference Letter:
- A signed letter of support from the applicant’s Head of Department or a senior scholar in the same field.
- The letter should confirm the applicant’s institutional affiliation and research area.
Important Note:
- Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Applications must be submitted in English.
- Individuals currently or previously affiliated with the Nordic Africa Institute are not eligible.
- In the rare event that the Scholarship Programme for 2026 does not receive full funding, applicants will be notified immediately.
