The Microsoft Productivity Program Scholars 2025 initiative aims to harness the power of research to ensure that artificial intelligence enhances work for everyone. Launched in the fall of 2024, the program offers postdoctoral scholars and visiting professors a unique opportunity to collaborate with Microsoft product teams on groundbreaking AI solutions.

As part of this program, scholars will embed within product teams to address productivity goals using their expertise in artificial intelligence. Scholars will also receive mentorship and guidance from the Office of Applied Research, led by Chief Scientist Jaime Teevan. Participating teams represent Microsoft’s productivity mission, including products such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, Copilot for Work, and more.

The program seeks to enable scholars to gain hands-on experience in developing AI-driven products that can impact millions of users. It also supports scholars in building impactful research agendas and advancing their teaching and training capabilities in the AI era.

Eligibility Criteria

The program is open to postdoctoral researchers and visiting scholars.

Post-Doctoral Scholars: Candidates must have obtained a Ph.D. by the program’s start date and may include individuals who have secured faculty positions but wish to defer their start for 1 to 1.5 years to collaborate with Microsoft teams.

Visiting Scholars: Candidates should be current professors interested in taking a one-year sabbatical to work with Microsoft product teams.

Applications are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and applicants should align with the roles and expectations of the program.
