About the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship

The New Zealand Government provides scholarships to students from eligible developing countries to study at New Zealand universities or Pacific institutions.

Types of Scholarships Available:
Undergraduate & Postgraduate Degree Scholarships – Full scholarships to study in New Zealand or the Pacific.
Short-Term Training Scholarships for Pacific & Timor-Leste citizens – Work experience and skills training for eligible applicants.
Short-Term Training Scholarships for Southeast Asia & Timor-Leste citizens – Short-term skills training programs.
English Language Training for Officials (NZELTO) – Government officials from eligible African and Asian countries can improve their English in New Zealand.

Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Djibouti, Eswatini, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Short-Term Training Scholarships:
Algeria, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, Comoros, DR Congo, Gabon, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Senegal, Togo, Tunisia, Republic of the Congo, Sao Tome & Principe.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, applicants must:
Be a citizen of an eligible developing country
Have lived in their home country for at least 2 years before applying
Be 18 years or older when the scholarship starts (exception for Samoa applicants who can be 17)
Preferably be under 40 years old
Meet academic entry and English language requirements
Demonstrate strong academic ability and a commitment to their country’s development

Work Experience Requirement:
Postgraduate applicants and those who finished high school more than 3 years ago must have:

  • One year of full-time work experience (30+ hours/week) OR
  • Two years of part-time work experience

School leavers & first-year undergraduates do not need work experience.

Applications are evaluated based on:
Academic excellence

Age preference (under 40 years preferred)
Course alignment with development goals
Leadership potential & interest in New Zealand relations
