The International Trade Centre (ITC) assists developing and transition countries to take advantage of expanding trade and investment opportunities. The Division of Enterprise Competitiveness And institutions (DECI) works from an innovative and inclusive market-driven approach to enhance the competitiveness of MSMEs from developing countries and to connect them to international value chains and markets supported by strong business support organisations and institutional ecosystems. DECI contributes to enhancing exporters’ competitiveness and strengthening institutions.

The Sector and Enterprise Competitiveness (SEC) Section helps developing country MSMEs address the challenges around sustainable value-chain development, catalysing sector-wide transformation, and improving market linkages – including using new digital channels. 

Within the SEC a particular focus is given to digital tools and communication channels to make a tangible difference in the world of small businesses by harnessing technology to overcome development challenges and boost trade. The Digital, Markets and Connectivity team is engaged in major projects across ASEAN, Africa and Central America championing ITC’s novel integrative approach tailored to different countries and contexts. From revolutionizing the agricultural sector to invigorating orange tourism, the JPO will be actively engaged in activities poised to drive positive change in the digital landscape.

ITC Junior Professional Officer Duties And Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the Head, Digital Markets and Connectivity, and the direct supervision of the Adviser e-commerce, the ITC Junior Professional Officer will:

  • Research the challenges and opportunities for MSMEs to make useful usage of technology to develop their business in local and international markets. Conduct research on emerging digital trends, solutions and best practices for businesses to connect to buyers. 
  • Support the integration of these solutions into projects, staying at the forefront of digital innovation by tracking the use of related technologies (such as AI) and services (such as innovative social media and ecommerce platforms) and developing a special expertise in one or more of these domains.
  • Manage relationships with partners in the provision of digital services and related fields from marketplaces to payments and logistics fostering collaboration and synergies. 
  • Research and adapt training materials to the specific communities and countries which will be addressed by the ITC corporate strategy for digital trade.
  • Participate in the design and execution of digital trade activities, ensuring alignment with project objectives. Effectively manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables to drive successful 

outcomes.

  • Coordinate activities in the field with partners from other international organisations – in particular those with related activities in digital.
  • Participate in the development of communication strategies to raise awareness and promote the objectives of ITC’s strategic focus on digital trade. Create compelling content to showcase project achievements and inspire stakeholders to engage in digital transformation efforts.
  • Liaise with colleagues in ITC – in areas covering related policy advisory, institutional capabilities and tech sector development – to ensure a coherent approach for ITC to deploy digital transformation and the opportunities of digital trade
  • Perform any other related duties as required.

ITC Junior Professional Officer Required Qualifications

Education 

ITC Junior Professional Officer must have an advanced university degree in business administration, economics, international trade, digital communications with a business focus, or a related field.

Note: ITC Junior Professional Officer must possess a first level university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and professional experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience 

A minimum of two years of experience in international trade, e-commerce or digital connectivity.

Experience of working with businesses or business support institutions in developing countries would be 

desirable.

Languages

Advanced knowledge (Fluency) of English and Korean is required.Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

ITC Junior Professional Officer Critical Job-specific Competencies

  • Knowledge of small business development; Knowledge of e-commerce, digital marketing or digitalisation of small businesses desirable; 
  • Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to global value chains. Ability to identify issues, analyze and participate in the resolution of issues/problems. Ability to conduct data collection using various methods. Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ITC Junior Professional Officer

1. Korean citizenship

2. Fluency in Korean and English

3. Completion of university with a Master’s degree or equivalent. A first level university degree (Bachelor’s 

degree) with an additional two years of work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced 

university degree. 

4. Certificate of English proficiency test: Applicants should score a minimum of (i) TOEFL iBT 100 or (ii) 

TEPS 430 or (iii) IELTS 7 or (iv) TOEIC 900

Note: TOEFL ‘Home Edition’ score is accepted while ‘MyBest Scores’ are not accepted; IELTS General 

Training and Academic test are both accepted; Test scores are valid for 2 years after the test date

5. Not older than 32 years of age as of 31st December 2025 (born after 1st January 1993). The maximum 

age limit for those who served in the military will be extended accordingly: 

one year will be extended for those who served for less than one year; two years will be extended for 

those who served for more than one year and less than two years; three years will be extended for 

those who served for two years or more.

6. Male applicants shall have completed the Korean military service or be exempted from it. Those who 

will be discharged from military service in the year of the application may also apply.

7. Applicants can apply for a maximum of two ITC Junior Professional Officer positions sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea during the year of application.
