Introduction to the IBM Sustainability Accelerator
The IBM Sustainability Accelerator is currently accepting proposals for technology-driven projects that promote resilient cities. Nonprofit and governmental organizations are encouraging proposals for tech-driven projects that will promote urban resiliency in support of Sustainable Development Goal 11. This year’s cohort will focus on finding long-term solutions to create inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities. The aim of these projects is to leverage technology to enhance urban resilience and address the following challenges that cities face in the 21st century:
- Hybrid cloud and AI solutions
- Sustainability software
- Data science-enabled insights
- Expert consulting and design services
According to IBM, communities can address societal needs and environmental issues simultaneously with the aid of science, technology, and innovation. With the correct application of technology, communities can capitalize on the potential of science, innovation, and industry to create positive, lasting change.
26 million people are forced into poverty each year by climate-related disasters and natural hazards, according to the World Bank. For these people to be able to respond to climate change, support climate adaptation, and increase resilience, they require institutional, financial, and technical resources.
IBM sought to accelerate and scale solutions—like those for mitigating climate change—that support marginalized communities that are most at risk from environmental threats by bringing experts and technology together, all while maintaining an environmental justice perspective.
When technology is used with purpose, IBM believes it has the power to change people’s lives. Because of this, the program has been designed to use science and cutting-edge technologies like AI and hybrid cloud to have a more significant, long-lasting, and sustainable social impact.
In three cohorts—sustainable agriculture, clean energy, and water management—the IBM Sustainability Accelerator has worked with fifteen distinct non-profits and governmental organizations.
Benefits of the IBM Sustainability Accelerator
The IBM Sustainability Accelerator supports communities vulnerable to environmental challenges by taking on a new sustainability topic and cohort of organizations each year:
- Global scale, local impact
- Two-year program duration
- No cost for participants
- Focus on populations at risk
This program provides organizations with the opportunity to access IBM’s leading technologies and resources, free of charge, to help solve their most pressing sustainability challenges. The Accelerator also enables IBM to gain access to the organization’s unique needs, challenges, and successes, so they can continue to refine their sustainability solutions. Additionally, the program allows IBM to gain insights into the sustainability needs of different communities and locations, so they can better tailor their products and services to meet those needs.
Eligibility Criteria
The IBM Sustainability Accelerator is open to nonprofit and government organizations globally. The program is designed to support organizations that are committed to making a lasting and positive impact on the environment and society. IBM is providing technical expertise, resources, and access to the latest hybrid cloud and AI technologies to help these organizations achieve their goals.
