The Grist Fellowship Program is a paid, year-long initiative to provide early-career journalists with real-world experience at a national news outlet. Fellows gain hands-on training, deepen their knowledge of environmental issues, and connect with leading sustainability experts. Alumni of the program have gone on to work at renowned outlets such as The Atlantic, Politico, and The Verge.
The 2025 fellowship offers three distinct focus areas for applicants:

Eligibility Criteria for the Grist Fellowship Program 2025
The program seeks individuals who meet the following criteria:
- Early-career journalists, including recent graduates, freelancers, or professionals transitioning into climate journalism.
- A four-year degree or equivalent professional experience.
- Demonstrated interest in climate and environmental journalism with a focus on science, politics, or policy.
- Familiarity with Grist’s brand and storytelling style.
- Strong skills in research, reporting, and meeting deadlines.
- Availability to commit full-time for 12 months.
- Must be legally authorised to work in the U.S. and reside there during the fellowship.
- Willingness to work during standard U.S. time zone hours.
