About the Doctoral Scholarship 2025 at the University of Antwerp
The University of Antwerp is offering a fully funded Doctoral scholarship in International Relations and Conflict Studies. This doctoral position is part of the research project “Tracing the Realities of Algorithmic Warfare: From Innovation to Deployment and its Impact on Civilian Harm,” funded by the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO). The project examines the role of algorithmic technology in warfare and its effects on civilians in conflict zones such as Ukraine and Gaza.
The selected candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Marijn Hoijtink (University of Antwerp) and Dr. Lauren Gould (Utrecht University) to develop and defend a PhD thesis within this research project.
Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting independent and collaborative fieldwork
- Studying the innovation, deployment, and impact of algorithmic warfare technologies
- Analyzing the experiences of various actors involved in modern conflict
- Examining the effects of algorithmic warfare on civilian populations
- Contributing to academic publications and presenting research at conferences, workshops, and seminars
- Engaging with stakeholders and civil society partners
- Assisting in limited teaching activities within the International Politics research group
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should meet the following criteria:
- Hold (or be about to complete) a Master’s degree in International Relations, Conflict Studies, Anthropology, or a related field
- Strong academic achievements and relevant research experience
- Interest in the ethical, political, and social dimensions of algorithmic warfare
- Knowledge of AI governance, emerging warfare technologies, and their civilian impact (preferred)
- Fluency in English (Dutch, Ukrainian, or Arabic proficiency is an asset)
- Willingness to engage with policymakers, civil society, and media
