About the ETH4D Doctoral Mentorship Programme 2025

The ETH4D Doctoral Mentorship Programme is designed to provide exceptional opportunities for doctoral candidates hailing from the least-developed, low-, and lower-middle-income countries. This program connects these candidates with esteemed faculty members from ETH Zurich, allowing them to receive personalised mentorship that can enhance their academic and professional development. 

Participants will not only gain valuable insights and guidance from experienced researchers, but they will also have the chance to engage in stimulating research environments, fostering their exposure to cutting-edge projects and methodologies. 

Additionally, the program offers access to crucial funding resources, which can significantly support the advancement of their doctoral studies, enabling them to focus more on their research and less on financial constraints. Overall, the ETH4D Doctoral Mentorship Programme aims to empower emerging scholars by equipping them with the necessary tools, knowledge, and networks to succeed in their academic pursuits.

The ETH4D Doctoral Mentorship Programme supports a one-year mentorship designed to:

  1. Facilitate monthly mentorship by an ETH Zurich professor, senior scientist, or postdoc with defined project goals such as conference presentations or joint publications.
  2. Provide a 1-3 month research stay at ETH Zurich during the mentorship period.
  3. Cover costs for attending a conference or obtaining research materials.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be doctoral candidates registered at a university or research institute in a least-developed, low-, or lower-middle-income country (as per the OECD/DAC 2022 list).
  • Applications must be submitted by the hosting ETH professorship. Direct submissions by candidates are not accepted.

Benefits of the ETH4D Doctoral Mentorship Programme

The programme provides financial support of up to 15,000 CHF, covering:

  • Roundtrip airfare (economy, max. 2,000 CHF) to and from Switzerland for the research stay.
  • Visa fees.
  • Travel allowance for an academic conference.
  • Costs for research materials (up to 6,000 CHF).
  • Health insurance fees.
  • Local transportation.
  • Accommodation and living allowance for the research stay at ETH Zurich.

Required Application Documents

The application must include:

  1. Budget (using the provided template).
  2. Project description (refer to the criteria document for required points).
  3. Motivation letter from the doctoral candidate (1 page).
  4. Recent university transcripts.
  5. Curriculum Vitae of the doctoral candidate (max. 2 pages, including publications).
  6. Two academic reference letters.
  7. Doctoral project proposal (if available).
  8. A support letter from the hosting ETH professor, detailing financial or in-kind contributions (if the mentor is a senior scientist or postdoc, their professor must also sign).

  1. Ensure all documents are in English.
  2. Submit the application electronically using the form on the ETH4D portal.
  3. Review the eligibility criteria and application requirements.
  4. The application deadline is 30th March 2025.
