These scholarships are an opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies in the fields of renewable energy and social development. They are awarded to students in South Africa who demonstrate a commitment to addressing the challenges of poverty and energy access in Africa.
About the Doug Banks Renewable Energy Vision (DBREV) Postgraduate Scholarships
The Doug Banks Renewable Energy Vision is a South African initiative aimed at building intellectual capital in Renewable Energy.
A two-year Scholarship is available to study towards a Master’s degree in Renewable Energy Studies at a South African University, commencing in 2024. Students should be from engineering, science, technology, built environment, or law backgrounds.
This initiative is set on finding postgraduate students, preferably from an engineering, scientific or technical background who are willing and able to carry forward Doug’s passion and vision.
The development of renewable energy was a passion of Dr. Doug Banks, who was passionate about meeting Africa’s energy needs. Doug was able to speak to and shape national renewable energy policies with a deep understanding of people and technology. Several young professionals have benefited from Doug’s enthusiasm as a mentor.
Eligibility Criteria for Doug Banks Renewable Energy Vision (DBREV) Postgraduate Scholarships
Scholarships are only available to students who meet the following criteria:
- A South African national or permanent resident who is passionate about making a difference in people’s lives in the African continent
- Fired up about addressing Energy Poverty and access through energy services provided by Renewable Energy systems
- Committed to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and addressing the challenges posed by Climate Change
Selection Criteria
Applicants will be selected if they are:

- Fired up about addressing Energy Poverty and access through the application of Renewable Energy
Benefits of Doug Banks Renewable Energy Vision (DBREV) Postgraduate Scholarships
Financial support and mentorship are available to assist a graduate student in taking forward the vision of the late Dr. Doug Banks. This scholarship will provide the student with the resources they need to further their research in the field of renewable energy. It will also provide the student with the opportunity to network with industry professionals and gain access to unique resources. Finally, it will provide the student with a mentor who can provide them with guidance and support.
