The Right Livelihood College (RLC) at the Center for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn, in collaboration with DAAD, is offering a PhD research scholarship focusing on Land Degradation, Environmental Justice, and Socio-Cultural Dynamics in Africa.

Successful applicants will conduct empirical research alongside Tony Rinaudo, the 2018 recipient of the Alternative Nobel Prize, gaining valuable expertise in sustainable development and socio-environmental justice.

The Right Livelihood College (RLC) is a global transdisciplinary initiative partnering with universities and the Right Livelihood Foundation to support impactful research addressing global challenges.

This PhD opportunity aims to examine land degradation in Africa, a pressing issue affecting rural populations, particularly smallholder farmers. Through this initiative, the University of Bonn is fostering cutting-edge research and policy-oriented solutions to promote environmental justice.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this prestigious scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Nationality: Must be a citizen of an African country and currently residing in Africa.
Educational Background: Possess an excellent master’s or equivalent degree in social sciences, humanities, political science, development studies, or a related field from a recognized institution.
Research Skills: Demonstrate proficiency in empirical and qualitative research methods. Prior experience in critical action and interdisciplinary research is an advantage.

Language Proficiency: Fluency in English is required.
Interest in the Topic: Show a strong commitment to research on land degradation, environmental justice, and socio-cultural dynamics.
