About the DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship
The Leadership for Africa scholarship programme offers bachelor’s degree holders a unique opportunity to pursue their Master’s degree in Germany. The programme is open to individuals who are nationals or refugees living in Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast or Mauritania.
As a scholarship holder, you will benefit from a complementary study programme that focuses on good governance, civil society and sustainable project management. This mandatory programme comprises several attendance phases each year, which must be completed in addition to your regular studies. Available Courses
The scholarship privileges include:
- Language course (2-6 months) in Germany before the start of the university studies
- M.A. or M.Sc. degree programme completed at a state or state-recognized university in Germany
- Accompanying side study programme (mandatory) in good governance, civil society and sustainable project management. This has to be completed in addition to the regular studies.
Eligibility Criteria
To be qualified for the DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship:
- Extremely competent refugees who are granted refugee status and who meet the prerequisites for master’s degree programs in Germany as well as the call for application requirements.
Applicants must fulfil the following conditions:
- being granted refugee status in their host countries prior to April 3, 2023
- Either Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, or Mauritania may be the country of asylum.
- Finished earning a bachelor’s degree
- Highly qualified graduates from Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast or Mauritania who fulfil the necessary qualifications for Master studies in Germany and the requirements in the call for applications.
Applicants must fulfil the following conditions:
- Citizenship of either Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast or Mauritania
- Country of residence Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast or Mauritania
- Completed Bachelor’s degree
Selection Process/Criteria
Based on the submitted application documents, a pre-selection process will be conducted. Candidates who pass the pre-selection stage will be invited to an interview with an independent selection committee of university professors in Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan, or Tanzania. It is important to note that during the interview, pre-selected candidates must present the original copies of all previously submitted documents.
The selection committee will evaluate the candidate’s previous academic achievements, language proficiency, and motivation, as well as the suitability of the planned studies in Germany. Additionally, the committee will assess how the chosen academic field can contribute to the home country’s development. It is a general requirement for candidates to appear in person for the interview, and they will be responsible for covering their travel expenses.

The scholarship includes:
- If necessary: Language course (2, 4 or 6 months) in Germany before the start of the study programme including the coverage of the test fees for a German language certificate
- Accompanying study programme
- Monthly scholarship rate payments of 861 EURO
- Adequate health, accident and private/personal liability insurance in Germany
- Travel allowance
- One-off study allowance
- If applicable, family allowance and monthly rent subsidy
Duration of DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship
Selected candidates will typically begin their German language course in April 2025 and enrol in a German higher education institution by roughly October 1st of that same year. The length of funding is decided by the typical study period of the selected course of study. Two years of full-time study are often needed to be eligible for master’s programs.
