About the Columbia Global Emerging Scholars Fellowship
The Columbia Global Emerging Scholars Fellowship Program is a prestigious year-long fellowship designed for early-career scholars in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who have been forcibly displaced or hold refugee status.
Hosted through Columbia Global Centers, this fellowship provides scholars with research support, mentorship, professional development, and access to Columbia University’s academic resources. The program enables scholars to continue their research, advance their academic careers, and stay connected to their host regions.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Columbia Global Emerging Scholars Fellowship Program, applicants must:
- Be forcibly displaced from their home country and academic institution.
- Hold a Ph.D. in the humanities or humanistic social sciences (in exceptional cases, candidates with a non-terminal M.A. or those on track to earn a Ph.D. may be considered).
- Be based in one of the eligible regions of the Columbia Global Centers:
- Nairobi (Sub-Saharan Africa)
- Amman (Middle East/North Africa)
- Santiago (Latin America/Caribbean)
- Demonstrate at least an intermediate level of English proficiency.
- Have received their highest academic degree within the last 12 years (exceptions will be considered based on career trajectories or extenuating circumstances).
- Commit to in-person participation at the relevant Columbia Global Center:
- Preference is given to fellows who can stay in person for the full fellowship.
- A minimum in-person requirement of six months applies if full-time residency is not feasible due to immigration, family, or other personal circumstances.
- Be engaged in interdisciplinary research, including work as a creative writer, artist, or curator.
- Participate in academic activities such as workshops, scholarly presentations, and roundtable discussions.
Eligible Countries
Scholars from any country can apply as long as they:
- Meet the displacement criteria.
- Are currently based in an eligible region (Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East/North Africa, or Latin America/Caribbean).
