About the Yenching Academy Masters Fellowships 2025
The Yenching Academy offers a prestigious, fully funded Master of Arts fellowships in Chinese studies designed for interdisciplinary study within the Humanities and Social Sciences. The program provides a deep understanding of China through courses in Literature and Culture, History and Archaeology, Philosophy and Religion, Politics and International Relations, Economics and Management, and Law and Society.
Courses are available in English and Chinese, allowing Yenching Scholars to customize their academic paths while exploring China’s diverse cultural, social, and political landscape. Scholars will have the chance to participate in infield studies to explore culturally, economically, or socio-politically significant regions of Mainland China.
Research Areas
Yenching Scholars can focus their research on one of six areas:
- Economics & Management
- History & Archaeology
- Law & Society
- Literature & Culture
- Philosophy & Religion
- Politics & International Relations
Note: Scholars are not limited by their chosen research area when selecting courses.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible, applicants must meet the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in any field (completed by August 31 of the enrollment year).
- Outstanding academic record.
- Strong interest in interdisciplinary study of China.
- Proven extracurricular achievement, community engagement, and social responsibility.
- Demonstrated leadership potential.
- Proficiency in English.
Preference will be given to candidates 25 years old or younger as of August 31, 2022. For those from countries with mandatory military service, the age limit is 27 years.
Benefits of the Yenching Academy Masters Fellowships
The Yenching Academy offers a generous fellowship package that includes:
- Full tuition coverage.
- A travel stipend for one round-trip journey between the Scholar’s base city and Beijing.
- Accommodation on campus.
- A monthly living stipend.
Program Duration
- The fellowship is for 12 months with an option to extend for a second year in Beijing.
- In the second year, scholars may apply for Teaching, Research, or Administrative Assistantships and research grants.
- Coursework is completed in the first year, with the second year dedicated to thesis writing and defence.
Note: International students who leave Beijing after the first year can complete the thesis defence remotely.
