The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) proudly announces the opening of applications for the 2025-2027 class of the Science for Development Fellowships (SDF). 

This prestigious two-year program offers American scientists and engineers a unique opportunity to contribute their expertise to international development initiatives while gaining valuable professional experience. The new cohort of SDF Fellows will begin their journey in October 2025.

USAID is recognized globally as the leading agency in international development, playing a vital role in humanitarian efforts, poverty reduction, and the promotion of democratic governance. 

The Science for Development Fellowships program was established by USAID to enhance the agency’s scientific and technical capacity in addressing global challenges. 

Through this fellowship, participants will apply their research skills to support and inform USAID’s mission, contributing to meaningful development outcomes

The application window for the 2025-2027 fellowship is now open, with a deadline of November 4, 2024, at 11:59 PM ET. This is a competitive process designed to identify and select the best candidates who are committed to leveraging their scientific expertise in the service of international development.

USAID Science for Development Fellowships Goals and Structure

The SDF program aims to achieve USAID’s development objectives through three key strategies:

  1. Direct Application of S&T Expertise: Engaging fellows to apply their scientific and technical knowledge across various USAID programs.
  2. Professional Development: Enhancing the capabilities of participating scientists and engineers to inform and advance evidence-based policies and practices.
  3. Building a Network of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs): Creating a network of institutions dedicated to STEMM education
  4.  that addresses global challenges.

Commitment and Placement

Fellows are expected to commit to the full two-year program, during which they will be placed in specific USAID offices in Washington, DC. Upon successful completion, fellows may have the opportunity to extend their fellowship for an additional year as an Advisory Fellow.

Who Should Apply?

  • The USAID Science for Development Fellowships program is primarily targeted at early- to mid-career scientists and engineers who are passionate about applying their skills to global development. 
  • Applicants must hold a qualifying doctorate degree in a STEM discipline, including social sciences, by December 31, 2024. U.S. 
  • Citizenship is mandatory, and applicants should be prepared to obtain the necessary security clearances.

Application Components and Helpful Tips

A complete application consists of several components, including contact information, education history, professional records, and personal statements. Three letters of recommendation are also required, to be submitted directly by referees through the online portal. The selection process for the  USAID Science for Development Fellowships is rigorous, involving multiple stages of review and scoring by independent panels.

Candidates who advance to the semi-finalist stage will be invited for an online interview, and final selections will be made based on a comprehensive assessment of all application materials and interviews.
