About the United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2025
The United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2025 is now open for applications. Those selected for the fellowship will receive financial support for the full nine-month duration of the program. The nine months are split into two phases. During Phase One, fellows will spend 3 months at DOALOS at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. In Phase Two, there will be a 6-month Advanced Academic Research and Study training at one of the prestigious participating Host Institutions of the UN Nippon Fellowship, which are located in Europe, the USA, Australia, Asia, Canada, and other countries.
The UN Nippon Foundation Fellowship is designed to provide training to government officials and mid-level professionals from developing countries in Ocean affairs and the law of the sea, as well as related disciplines like marine science. Participants will gain insight into international legal frameworks, key issues, and best practices in ocean affairs, and will also become acquainted with the work of the United Nations.
UN Nippon Foundation Fellowship Schedule
Since the United Nations headquarters are located in New York, fellows will spend the first three months conducting research, receiving training, and honing their professional skills there.
In order to obtain in-depth knowledge, the following six months will be spent in the preferred host institution. The UNNF fellows are housed at 32 different institutions across the world.
Fellows are anticipated to return home after completing their fellowships.
- Phase One: Three months of research and training at DOALOS at the UN headquarters in New York, from March/April to June.
- Phase Two: Advanced Academic Research and Study for six months, at one of the host institutions, from July to December
It is anticipated of the fellows that, in exchange, they will supply:
- A written thesis spanning 100 pages
- An overview of the findings
- A framework for ocean governance

Eligibility Criteria
The following guidelines will apply to fellowship applications:
- Fall within the 25–40 age range.
- You need to have earned your first degree from a university.
- Government representatives
- Professional ranks are in the middle of government or non-government organizations.
- Only applications from developing nations are accepted.
- Be curious about the subjects covered by the UN Nippon Foundation fellowship.
