About U.S. Foreign Service Internship
The U.S. Foreign Service Internship Program (USFSIP), established in 2014, offers a unique, merit- and needs-based opportunity for undergraduate students to gain firsthand experience in U.S. diplomacy.
This program consists of two paid summer internships, providing students with a blend of professional and academic growth while exploring career opportunities at the Department of State.
Program Highlights:
- Two Summer Internships: Participants engage in a two-year commitment, spending the first summer in Washington, D.C., and the second summer at a U.S. embassy or consulate overseas.
- Comprehensive Training: The program includes a three-week orientation covering U.S. diplomatic history, writing skills, and professional development, followed by hands-on experience in policy work.

Eligibility Criteria:
- Open to U.S. Citizens: Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or those owing allegiance to the U.S.
- For Current Undergraduates: Eligible students must be enrolled in an undergraduate program, maintaining a GPA of 3.2 or higher.
- Financial Need: Demonstration of financial need is required through the Student Aid Index on the FAFSA or a Statement of Financial Need.
- Rising Sophomores/Juniors: Applicants should be sophomores or juniors at the time of application, ensuring they will be continuing their education through spring 2026.
- Security Clearance: Participants must obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance.
U.S. Foreign Service Internship Program Structure
- First Summer (2025): A 10-week internship in Washington, D.C., including three weeks of orientation and seven weeks of policy work at the Department of State.
- Second Summer (2026): A 10-week assignment at a U.S. embassy or consulate overseas.
- Intervening Year: Students must maintain their GPA and take the Foreign Service Officer Test (FSOT).
U.S. Foreign Service Internship Application Process
- Deadline: Applications must be submitted electronically through USAJOBS by September 8, 2024.
- Documents Required: Applicants need to submit transcripts, a resume built in USAJOBS, a Statement of Interest, and a Statement of Financial Need. FAFSA Submission Summaries are optional but recommended.
- Evaluation: A selection panel reviews applications based on academic performance, financial need, and demonstrated interest in foreign affairs.
