INTRODUCTION TO THE ELSA/KAS National Essay Writing Competition for Young Ethiopian Students
Ethiopian Law Schools Association (ELSA) in collaboration with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Office Ethiopia/African Union is delighted to unveil the National Essay Writing Competition centered on the theme “The Role of Academia in Upholding the Rule of Law and Human Rights in Ethiopia.”
This initiative seeks to ignite intellectual engagement and reflective analysis regarding academia’s pivotal contribution to advancing the rule of law and protecting human rights within our nation.
The competition endeavors to stimulate critical thought and scholarly dialogue among participants, encouraging them to delve into the multifaceted intersections between academia and the fundamental principles of the rule of law and human rights.
By prompting participants to explore the intricate dynamics of academia’s involvement in these realms, the competition aims to cultivate a deeper understanding of the significance of scholarly institutions in shaping legal frameworks and societal norms that uphold justice and human dignity.
Participants are encouraged to examine various dimensions of academia’s role in upholding the rule of law and human rights, including but not limited to legal education, research, advocacy, and policy formulation.
Through their essays, contestants are urged to critically assess the challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities that academia faces in promoting a legal system that respects human rights and ensures justice for all members of society.
Furthermore, the competition aspires to foster a culture of intellectual inquiry and academic excellence, emphasizing the importance of rigorous scholarship in addressing pressing legal and human rights issues facing Ethiopia.
By providing a platform for aspiring scholars to articulate their insights and perspectives, the competition seeks to amplify the voices of the next generation of legal minds committed to advancing the rule of law and human rights in our country.
ELSA and KAS Office Ethiopia/African Union look forward to receiving thought-provoking essays from talented individuals across Ethiopia, whose contributions will undoubtedly enrich the discourse on the vital role of academia in shaping a just and rights-respecting society.

Eligibility Requirements For the ELSA/KAS National Essay Writing Competition
This competition seeks to stimulate critical thinking and academic discourse surrounding the enhancement of the rule of law and the protection of human rights in Ethiopia. It invites passionate undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral students in fields such as law, political science, philosophy, and related social sciences, who are currently enrolled in Ethiopian institutions, to participate in an essay competition.
Theme:
The central theme of the competition is “The Role of Academia in Upholding the Rule of Law and Human Rights in Ethiopia.” Participants can choose to explore this overarching theme or delve into specific sub-themes within it, crafting compelling essays based on their areas of interest.
Essay Specifications:
Essays should not exceed 3000 words (excluding references, bibliography, and footnotes). They must be written in English, spanning between 10 to 15 pages, with standard page dimensions (8”x11” or A4).
Font size should be no smaller than 12, with 1.5 line spacing, and preferably using fonts such as Times New Roman or Calibri. Submissions should be in PDF format.
Referencing:
Applicants are required to use a specific referencing style (e.g., APA, Harvard, OSCOLA) for accurate citation and to prevent plagiarism.Originality:Submitted essays must be original, innovative, and previously unpublished. Works found to be plagiarized or previously published will be automatically disqualified.Language: Essays shall be written in professional English.
Benefits/Awards for the ELSA/KAS National Essay Writing Competition:
The top three essays will receive the following
cash prizes:First Place: 30,000 ETB
Second Place: 25,000 ETB
Third Place: 20,000 ETB
Certificates of Participation
All students who register and submit their essays before the deadline will be awarded a Certificate of Participation.
Additionally, the winning essays will be showcased at a workshop hosted by ELSA and the KAS Office Ethiopia/African Union on May 15, 2024.
This workshop serves as a platform for authors to present their ideas, participate in meaningful discussions, and make valuable contributions to Ethiopia’s academic and politico-legal landscape.
