The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is committed to attracting top-tier international students. The Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS) is available to outstanding students from outside the EU/EEA who wish to study at UvA.

Application Criteria

To be considered for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship, students must hold a non-EU/EEA passport and have applied for a degree program at the University of Amsterdam.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements, regardless of their chosen course:

  • Citizenship: Applicants must be from a country outside the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA).
  • Language Proficiency: English is the primary language for communication. Non-English speakers must ensure all application documents are translated into English.
  • Admission: Applicants must have already been accepted into a full-time one-year Master’s program at the University of Amsterdam.
  • English Test Scores: Applicants are required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores as proof of English proficiency.
  • Academic Excellence: Applicants must demonstrate strong academic performance and intellectual capability.
  • Other Scholarships: Candidates who are receiving other scholarships from European universities are ineligible to apply.

Required Documents

The following documents are necessary to complete the application for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship:

  • Academic Transcript
  • GPA score
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A motivation letter (maximum 500 words) explaining the reasons for choosing the Master’s program and why the scholarship is important. You can refer to the LLAMS sample as a guide.

How to Apply for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship

To apply for the AMS, follow these steps:

  1. Master’s Application: First, apply for your chosen Master’s program at UvA, ensuring your application is complete with all necessary documents, including valid language test scores.
  2. UvA Student Number: After submitting your Master’s application, you will receive a UvA student number and MyInfo reference number.
  3. AMS Application: Complete and submit the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship application form (see link below), including the following documents:
  • Scan of the identity page of your passport
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Motivation letter detailing how your chosen Master’s program aligns with your academic and personal goals, and why you are the ideal candidate for the scholarship.
  • Letter of recommendation from an academic professor or staff member highlighting your academic strengths.
  • Financial plan to demonstrate your financial need for the scholarship and proof that you can cover any additional costs.

Important Note:

All applications for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship must be submitted no later than 15 January 2025, 23:59 CET. Late applications will not be accepted.
