The Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) is the only global program that arranges, funds, and supports fellowships for threatened and displaced scholars at partnering higher education institutions worldwide. These year-long fellowships, valued at USD $25,000, support temporary academic positions at institutions of higher learning where Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) fellows can continue their work in safety. In most cases, IIE-SRF fellows are eligible to apply for a second and final year of fellowship support.
Eligible Fields
All academic fields and disciplines are eligible.
Eligibility Criteria
IIE-SRF accepts applications from professors, researchers, and public intellectuals who face threats and cannot continue their work in their home countries. Scholars from any country and in any academic field may qualify. Applicants are assessed based on academic qualifications, professional experience, and the urgency of the threats they face.
Preference is given to scholars who:
- Hold a Ph.D. or highest degree in their field and have significant teaching and/or research experience at a university, college, or other institution of higher learning.
- Have an established record of published research.
- Demonstrate superior academic accomplishment or promise.
- Are facing or have recently fled from immediate, targeted threats to their lives and/or careers in their home countries or countries of residence.
- Will benefit their home and/or host academic communities.
Unfortunately, IIE-SRF typically cannot consider applications from individuals who:
- Are seeking to continue their studies (e.g., Ph.D. studies) or to complete an academic training program.
- Have been displaced or resided outside their home countries for more than two years.
- Hold citizenship or permanent residency in a safe second country.
- Have already completed two years on a comparable fellowship or other program for threatened scholars.
Selection Criteria
Applicants are evaluated based on the following:
- Academic qualifications and experience.
- Urgency of threats faced in their home country.
- Demonstrated academic accomplishments, such as published research.
- Potential to contribute to their academic community at the host institution.
- Support from the host institution, including financial contributions or in-kind resources.
Eligible Countries
The IIE-SRF Fellowship is open to scholars from all countries.
Benefits of the Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) Fellowship
Selected fellows will receive:
- A grant of up to USD $25,000.
- Individual health insurance coverage.
- Relocation funding to support the fellow’s move.
- A visiting academic appointment for up to one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year.
- Additional financial support from the host institution to match or exceed the fellowship award.
- Matching support may include a stipend, housing, airfare, or health insurance.
- In-kind contributions from the host institution, such as office space, computer and library access, or laboratory/bench fees.
- A potential waiver of full host funding for appointments in lower-cost regions or countries.
