About the Fellowship

The Institute for Law & AI (LawAI) is calling for applications for its 2025 Summer Research Fellowship, a paid program designed to equip law students, professionals, and academics with practical skills and knowledge in the evolving field of AI law and policy. The LawAI Summer Research Fellowship is an 8-12 week immersive program offering mentorship, professional development, and hands-on research opportunities. Fellows will collaborate on projects aligned with LawAI’s mission, including topics such as AI governance, liability frameworks, international regulatory institutions, and the integration of AI into legal systems.

Participants can choose between two start dates and work remotely, with a fully funded on-site week in Washington, D.C., from July 7-11, 2025, providing invaluable networking and collaborative opportunities.

    • Cohort 1: May 27, 2025 – August 15, 2025
    • Cohort 2: June 16, 2025 – September 4, 2025
  • Commitment: Full-time work for at least 8 weeks (part-time options available for exceptional candidates).

Eligibility Criteria

LawAI encourages a diverse pool of applicants with varied backgrounds and skill sets. Prior experience in AI-specific research is not mandatory. The ideal candidates are:

  • Graduate law students (JD, LLM), PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, or legal academics.
  • Professionals transitioning into AI law and policy.
  • Individuals passionate about addressing AI-related legal and ethical challenges.

Key Requirements:

  • Commitment to full-time, remote-based work for at least 8 weeks.
  • Ability to attend the in-person week in Washington, D.C., from July 7-11.
  • Interest in exploring U.S. law and policy (applicants from all countries are welcome).

Selection Process

LawAI evaluates applicants through a multi-step process to identify those with the potential to contribute meaningfully to its mission:

  1. Step 1: Application Submission
    • Submit your academic CV and complete the brief application form (~15 minutes).
    • Deadline: January 15, 2025, by 11:59 pm.
  2. Step 2: Recorded Video Responses
    • Record answers to questions designed to assess your perspectives, values, and thought processes (~30 minutes).
  3. Step 3: Research Interview
    • Participate in a 40-60 minute interview to discuss your research interests, goals, and program fit.
  4. Step 4: Decision
