About the Hokkaido University MEXT Scholarship

The Hokkaido University MEXT Scholarship offers a prestigious opportunity for international students to pursue their Master’s or Doctoral degrees in Japan. Funded by the Japanese Government (MEXT), this scholarship targets those enrolling in the Graduate Program for Environmental Conservation Leadership for Post-SDGs at Hokkaido University, beginning in October 2025.

The scholarship aims to foster global leaders in the field of environmental conservation, specifically focusing on challenges aligned with the Post-Sustainable Development Goals (Post-SDGs).

Benefits of the Program

  • Monthly Stipend:
    • ¥144,000 for Master’s students
    • ¥145,000 for Doctoral students
  • Full Tuition Exemption: Waives application, matriculation, and tuition fees.
  • Travel Expenses: Covers airfare for both arrival and departure to and from Japan.

Eligible Fields of Study

This scholarship is exclusively available for students enrolling in the Graduate Program for Environmental Conservation Leadership. The program emphasizes issues relating to environmental sustainability and conservation leadership, aligned with the Post-SDGs framework.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this program, applicants must:

  1. Be international students with outstanding academic achievements.
  2. Be applying for a Master’s or Doctoral degree at the Graduate School of Environmental Science at Hokkaido University.
  3. Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.30/3.00 in their most recent academic qualifications.
  4. Meet the specific language proficiency requirements set by Hokkaido University.

Selection Criteria

  • Academic Performance: Applicants are evaluated based on their academic achievements and GPA.
  • Language Proficiency: Proof of language proficiency (usually English or Japanese) is required.
  • Supervisor Agreement: You must secure the agreement of a prospective supervisor at Hokkaido University, as they will play a role in the recommendation process.
  • Internal Screening: The university conducts internal screening to nominate the most qualified applicants.

Once your supervisor agrees to support your application, submit the following documents via email:

  • Copy of Passport or equivalent government-issued ID
  • Official Academic Transcripts and certificate of (prospective) graduation
  • Proof of Language Proficiency (English or Japanese)

  • Career Plan
