Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Applicants must be actively employed as full-time journalists with a minimum of seven years of professional experience.
- Freelance journalists must demonstrate consistent reporting over the past seven years.
- Eligible applicants include reporters, writers, editors, producers, or program hosts working in various media formats, including newspapers, magazines, online news platforms, television, and radio.
- Candidates should have a proven record of reporting on science or issues that interdisciplinary science seeks to address.
- Journalists from any country may apply, but preference is given to those working primarily in the English language.
- No formal educational qualifications are required for eligibility.
- Professionals primarily working in public relations, public information, trade press, government, or academia without meeting the above journalistic criteria are not eligible.
Selection Criteria
Applicants may either self-nominate or be recommended by Santa Fe Institute faculty, staff, trustees, employers, or colleagues. Candidates who stand out will be invited for a video interview as part of the final selection process, which will be overseen by the Institute’s leadership.
Required Documents
Applicants must submit the following documents to complete their application:
- An updated resume or CV.
- Five examples of professional work that highlight substantive coverage of complex systems science or related issues. Submissions may be in the form of PDFs, scanned files, or active URLs.
- A detailed fellowship proposal letter outlining how the journalist intends to use the fellowship to enhance their journalistic experience and expand their perspective.
- Two letters of recommendation from editors or professionals familiar with the applicant’s work. Letters should be sent directly by the authors to ariel@santafe.edu with the subject line containing the applicant’s name and “CSSS Journalism Fellowship.”
