About the Belgium PhD Scholarship

The Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is excited to announce the availability of a full-time PhD scholarship as part of the European INTERREG North-West Europe (NWE) initiative, specifically the “Forest4Youth” program. This scholarship is particularly designed for researchers who are deeply passionate about exploring the intersections of mental health, virtual reality (VR), and forest therapy.

In this groundbreaking PhD scholarship position, candidates will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of both virtual and real forest immersion on adolescent mental health outcomes. The research will adopt an interdisciplinary approach, integrating methodologies from psychology, environmental science, and technology to uncover the mechanisms by which nature-based therapy can influence mental well-being.

This study aims to provide critical insights into the effectiveness of digital mental health interventions, particularly those that utilize immersive technologies like VR to simulate natural environments. The findings are expected to contribute significantly to the fields of nature-based therapy and contemporary mental health practices, with the potential to inform future therapeutic strategies for adolescents facing mental health challenges.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Hold a Master’s degree (120 ECTS credits) in a relevant field
  • Have experience or a strong interest in mental health and psychiatry (preferably with adolescents)
  • Show enthusiasm for forest therapy and virtual reality applications
  • Possess experience in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
  • Demonstrate strong writing and synthesis skills
  • Be fluent in English and French (written & spoken)
  • Be willing to travel for research collaborations

Selection Criteria

Candidates are evaluated based on a comprehensive assessment of their academic background, including GPA, relevant coursework, and honors received. Additionally, research experience is taken into account, focusing on the nature of previous projects, technical skills acquired, and any publications or presentations.

Motivation is assessed through personal statements and letters of recommendation that reflect the candidate’s passion and commitment to the field. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview, which can be conducted either online via video conferencing platforms or in person at the designated interview location, allowing for a more personalized evaluation of their fit for the program.
