2024 UNESCO KULTURWEIT TANDEM EXCHANGE is a program designed for young Africans, offering full funding for participation.

It aims to facilitate international cultural exchange and volunteering opportunities in Germany.

Applications are now being accepted for the UNESCO Kulturweit Tandem Exchange Program.

From February 12th to March 10th, 2024 (12 p.m. CET), women from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, and young people from Ghana, Cameroon, Kenya, Madagascar, Namibia, and Togo can apply online for the kulturweit incoming program. The stay in Germany will occur from the end of August to November 2024.

This international cultural voluntary service, organized by the German UNESCO commission, offers young people from Germany aged 18 to 26 the chance to participate in foreign cultural and educational activities for either six or twelve months. Throughout the program, volunteers receive financial support and attend seminars, making kulturweit accessible to all young people.

Formal Requirements:

Participants must be between 18 and 26 years old for the entire duration of the voluntary service; they cannot turn 27 during their assignment.
The primary place of residence must be in Germany (i.e., volunteers should have spent the majority of the past two to three years in Germany, though German citizenship is not required).

German native speakers or those with excellent proficiency in German (level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) are preferred.
Good basic knowledge of English and ideally some familiarity with a language spoken in the host country are desirable.
Participants must be in good health and physical condition suitable for staying abroad.
A passport valid for at least six months after the scheduled return is required.

Application Deadline: March 10, 2024

  • Organization and implementation of the accompanying pedagogic program
  • Enrollment and payment of travel health insurance, liability and accident insurance, as well as German social security
  • Other program expenses such as allowances, travel contributions, language classes, room, and board

Selection Process:
After a preliminary selection by the German Commission for UNESCO, application documents are submitted to respective partner organizations for final selection. After the final selection of applications is completed, applicants will receive an assignment offer.

Assignment Proposal:

Approximately six months before the scheduled departure, all future volunteers receive an assignment proposal.

Assignment Location:

Applicants who receive an assignment proposal will have about one week to decide whether to accept or decline the assignment offer. Declined assignments will be offered to the next applicant on the waitlist.

Selection Process:

  • The kulturweit team of the German Commission for UNESCO will conduct a preliminary selection process within the next four to six weeks.
  • After the preliminary selection phase, all applicants will receive a notification about the status of their application by email.
  • At this time, rejections or positive intermediate notifications are sent to applicants, which will be taken into account in the second phase of the selection process.
  • All remaining applications will then be handed over to one of kulturweit’s partner organizations for final selection. The selection process will be completed within ten to twelve weeks.
