
About Doucet Scholarship 2026
In order to facilitate access to the collection for young researchers from outside Frankfurt, especially from Latin America, who are interested in using this important collection, the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory provides an annual scholarship for a three-month research stay at the Institute.
The eighth call for applications for the “Doucet Scholarship 2026” is open and the deadline for sending applications for a stay from January to March 2025 (05.01.–31.03.2026) is 15 September 2025.

The competitively Doucet Scholarship 2026 presents a chance for early-career scholars, particularly those not based in Frankfurt and with a particular interest in Latin American colonial law, to fully use one of the largest and most famous collections of legal history in Europe.

Eligibility Criteria for the Doucet Scholarship 2026
- Candidates from all countries are eligible.
- You should be a young researcher residing outside of Frankfurt, with a strong preference for candidates from Latin America.
- Your proposal must center on the history of colonial law and clearly state your intention to utilize the Doucet Collection.
- Application materials must be submitted in either English or Spanish.

Specifically, the financial support consists of a scholarship of 1,365 €; reimbursement of the airfare (up to 1,500 € for transatlantic flights, 750 € for flights within Europe). There is also the possibility of renting a room in the Institute’s residences (available for full months and costs approx. 680 € per month).
Young researchers may submit proposals on the history of colonial law, directly related to the monographs and editions of sources that make up the Doucet Collection.
