University of Waterloo International Master’s Award of Excellence

About the University Of Waterloo International Master’s Award Of Excellence

The University of Waterloo is thrilled to announce that it is now welcoming applications from international students who are keen on applying for its prestigious International Master’s Award of Excellence. This award is valued at $2,500 per term and is applicable for a maximum of five full-time terms within the program’s time limit of six terms.

Effective May 1, 2019, during the spring 2019 admissions cycle, eligible international master’s students entering a research-based graduate program at the University of Waterloo will have the opportunity to be awarded this esteemed scholarship. The selection process for this award will be based on academic excellence as demonstrated through the students’ applications for admission to the graduate program, and faculties will nominate qualifying students based on the faculty’s award allocation. This is an incredible opportunity for international students to pursue their higher education goals at the University of Waterloo.

Eligibility Criteria

  • International students with a valid Canadian study permit who are registered full-time and assessed international tuition fees.
  • Normally given to students in research-based programs (thesis or major research paper).
  • Will normally only be given to students entering the first term of their program (term 1.0).
  • Students must demonstrate academic excellence through criteria established by the faculty.
  • Students must meet the academic progress requirements of their program and not have outstanding probationary admission requirements.
  • This scholarship may be given in addition to other internal or external funding opportunities (such as the OGS, UW Graduate Scholarship, etc.). Please take note that scholarships differ from sponsorships.
  • Generally speaking, students should not be fully or partially self-funded above the faculty minimum levels of support, nor should they be concurrently receiving foreign government or agency sponsorship (e.g., China Scholarship Council, Libyan sponsorship, etc.).
  • Nominations for an IMAE are not accepted from students who are grandparents under the current IMSA program, but they are accepted from students who were previously awarded an IMSA for a master’s degree that they have already completed.
  • Based on their admissions application, students will be automatically considered for this award. Departments and/or faculty will establish their internal procedure for choosing recipients based on the allotment and eligibility requirements.
  • When necessary, faculties may apply more stringent qualifying requirements.

Selection Criteria

Faculty nominations will be chosen in accordance with the faculty’s master’s award distribution. The selection of students will be based on their application for admission to the graduate program and their record of academic excellence.
