About the UNESCO AfriMAB-GRÓ LRT Land Restoration Fellowships
Applications are officially open for the 2026 UNESCO AfriMAB-GRÓ LRT Land Restoration Fellowships, a prestigious opportunity that fully funds African biosphere reserve professionals for advanced training in Iceland. Hosted by the GRÓ Land Restoration Training Programme (GRÓ LRT)—a UNESCO Category 2 Centre—the fellowship equips participants with the scientific knowledge, practical tools, and international network needed to drive sustainable land management and ecosystem restoration in Africa.
The GRÓ LRT Programme, based at the Agricultural University of Iceland, offers a six-month postgraduate-level course that merges academic learning, applied fieldwork, and professional development. Each year, environmental specialists from around the globe gather in Iceland to study innovative methods for combating land degradation, rehabilitating ecosystems, and restoring biodiversity.
The fellowship combines 12 weeks of intensive coursework with 12 weeks dedicated to an individual project, ensuring that the acquired knowledge translates directly into practical solutions at the participant’s home institution. Graduates receive a Postgraduate Diploma in Ecosystem Restoration and Sustainable Land Management (30 ECTS)—a qualification that holds international recognition.
Why This Fellowship Matters
This fellowship is more than just a study programme—it is an investment in Africa’s environmental future. Land degradation threatens food security, water availability, and biodiversity across the continent. By equipping biosphere reserve professionals with advanced technical knowledge, leadership skills, and global networks, the UNESCO AfriMAB-GRÓ LRT Fellowship empowers participants to implement transformative restoration projects upon returning home.
Graduates join an international alumni network of restoration leaders, enabling continued collaboration, knowledge exchange, and access to global best practices long after the fellowship ends.
