SSRC Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa: Doctoral Fellowships 2023

Application Deadline: February 10, 2023

About – SSRC Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa

The SSRC Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa Program was launched in 2011. It responds to an emerging dilemma within higher education in the global South. Although, this is caused by the extraordinary emphasis on increasing undergraduate enrollment without proportionate investment in faculty development.

This limits the ability of universities to produce the next generation of researchers, faculty, technocrats, and leaders.

The program currently operates to strengthen tertiary education in Africa.

That is, by offering a sequence of fellowship opportunities for promising Ph.D. students.

They undertake research and make steady progress toward completion of the doctoral degree and one post-doctoral fellowship.

The program also offers activities that nurture the intellectual development of its fellows.

Thereby, connecting them to create a pipeline for the development of faculty and research communities working on peace, security, and development topics across the continent.

Thematic Priorities

It also strengthens interdisciplinary social science research capacity to address these issues.

The program encourages innovative research on peace, security, and development topics.

Which equally moves the boundaries of scholarship and research by exploring concrete linkages between these themes. We envision supporting a diverse set of projects seeking to shed light on a range of economic, political, social, conflict, and peacebuilding processes using evidence-based research.

In addition, we hope some projects will examine large-scale phenomena and others small-scale social processes. Meanwhile, the strongest projects typically will explore connections across these scales. Some research projects will rigorously explore elements of governance, civil society, human rights, peacebuilding mechanisms/institutions and processes, and rule of law. Others will explore the root causes of conflict, emerging trajectories and forms of conflict, insecurities, and human mobilities. Above all projects should advance important fields of study and social science knowledge.
